The Boston Tea Party by the Sons of Liberty in Boston on December 16, 1773. Was a response to the Tea Act (1773)

Some of the demonstrators disguised as Mohawk Indians boarded 3 ships and threw the chests of tea into the Boston Harbor.

The colonists pledged their loyalty to the crown in the document.

• The Stamp Act was enacted in 1765 by British Parliament. It imposed a direct tax on ALL printed material in the colonies.

• The most politically active people of colonial society were the most negatively affected by the act. (Who are they?)

• The Stamp Act intensified colonial hostility toward the British and was a major development that will lead to the American Revolution.

Battle of Saratoga

AIM: What was the “shot heard around the world”?

The Battles of Lexington and Concord, fought on April 19, 1775, were the first military clashes of the American Revolutionary War.

The Battle of Saratoga was significant in the Revolutionary War because it convinced the French to support the Americans.

The Massachusetts militia routed the British Army forces and were soon joined by militias from Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. These militias would become the core of the Continental Army.

The Battle of Yorktown (October 19, 1781)

AIM: What was the purpose of the Declaration of

Independence?

The winter of 1777–1778 at Valley Forge was the scene of much hardship for General Washington’s troops.

Hopelessly trapped at Yorktown, Virginia, British General Cornwallis surrenders 8,000 British soldiers & seamen, effectively bringing an end to the American Revolution.

Common Sense, written by Thomas Paine, explained to the colonists the reasons why they should become free from British rule.

There are similarities between the pamphlet Common Sense and the document known as the Declaration of Independence. Both documents called for independence from Great Britain.
