Fashion photographers

  • The black and white shots taken in New York City captures the realism and the reality in the world of hip hop.
  • By taking these photographs it documented the reality of the earliest movements of hip hop and New York.
  • It was a way of showing the lifestyle was during the 1980s.

Yusunari Kikuma

  • His money comes from photoshoots for fashion magazines i.e. Vogue.
  • He was inspired from old Japanese paintings that moved him in the past. He recreates a similar mood that he wishes the public would feel in his work of fashion photography.
  • He promotes diversity in his work as a photographer. This was used as an influence in the photos mixing Japanese culture with European culture.
  • He names it as "now" meaning he wants to show modern influences combined with traits of traditional and extraordinary.
  • He enjoys Irving penn's and Aredon's work as fashion photographers.

From the photographs we do see a influence of Japanese pop culture from the metallic background in the picture from the left.

The close ups and other shots emphasise the fusion of mxing Western culture with Eastern Culture. We can see the type of experiements that Kikuma played with. e.g. the transparent jacket overlaying the vibrant dres coul be symbolising or have a meaning.

The different use of lighting enhances each of the different clothes and accessories which the models wear.

This for the viewer makes it clear what clearly is being advertised.

There's a difference of how he approaches fashion photography. We see this through the different compostions he uses ine each photo.

Similar to Kikuma there could be a hidden meaning for what he wants to portay.

These are a few of the photos Kwon took whilst being an active music photographer. We can see what kind of message she wanted to portray of these people and the culture of HipHop music at the time.

Photography is the art or process of taking and processing photographs

Music Photography

Sue Kwon

  • She spent 20 years taking photographs of New York’s neighbourhoods and people documenting its urban culture.
  • From 1987 to 2007 she took pictures of many hip hop rappers at underground nightclubs. She started her career working as a photographer for The village voice. She would take pictures for runways and other arts, music, dance, theatre and film reviews.
  • The purpose of these photographs was to promote educate the public about Hiphop culture and life in New York City.
  • Her photographs were used for hip hop magazines and album covers. Then later after releasing her book "Street View" it held all of her photos.

Chi Modu conveys a similar theme to Sue Kwon of documenting realism. This explains his way of allowing his photography to show a different world of art; adding a sense of seriousness to photojournalism. There's this sense of hiphop culture portraying through a political message for the genre of hiphop in its earliest movements.

This is the book cover taken and about the music photographer Sue Kwon which was released in 2010.

This freelanced fashion photographer is called Husumu. These are a few of his photos that featured in Vogue for Designer Bajoowoo's spring clothing line in 2016. We can see the type of feel and mood the designer wanted in his show as Husumu demonstrated through his pictures to show a different catwalk than to the usual catwalks we see in fashion week.

How do the photographs effect the viewer?

Penn and Kikuma's approach in fashion photography is to make their photographs attractive in order to sell the product in their way of capturing their subject. Their photographs create this sense of beauty in the way they of producing.

Kwon and chi are capturing the reality of Hiphop and New York City. Music photography is to promote and educate the music industry. Bringing awareness to the viewer through documenting the lifestyle and reality of making music.

We can see that each photographer is using their skills in photography to present a certain meaning or purpose of the work. This can be seen in their of compostion that best represnt the theme Music or Fashion
