REPRESENTATION THEORY

Skins Trailer

Mulvey - Feminist Theory

  • Mulvey's feminist theory represents girls as promiscuous objects for the men as they go around in bra + pants kissing boys -proving to be the subject of the male gaze.

Dyer - Stereotypes

  • Typical stereotypes for the representation of party animals, showing them being reckless, drug addicts who carelessly don't consider any consequences of their actions.

Baudrillard - Representation/Hyper Reality

  • Baudrillard's theory shows teenagers to have wild parties with reckless behaviour that has been influenced by 'Skins parties' , provoking the audience to mimic the behaviour,

Ferdinand De Sessure - Semiotics

  • Ferdinand De Sessure's theory of semiotics shows aspects in Skins such as drugs, which would be thought of as dangerous but in their case is thought of as fun.

In the Skins trailer, i like how reckless they are portrayed and the thought that youths don't consider the consequences to their actions. I also like the thought of using a house party as the setting for our video as it would suit the narrative and drum & bass genre.

However, aspects I don't like are the use of drugs as this would been seen as inappropriate if used in our music video.

Rihanna - What's My Name?

Mulvey - Feminist Theory

  • With Rihanna being dressed provocatively, she is the obejct to Drake's male gaze - catching his attention

Dyer - Stereotypes

  • Male (Drake) is fully dressed while female (Rihanna) partially clothed - women are stereotypically promiscuous.
  • Rihanna doing the washing up - women are typically stereotyped to do housework, such as washing up.

Baudrillard - Representation/Hyper Reality

  • Unrealistic aspects as Rihanna and Drake wouldn't realistically be seen doing their own shopping in a local store.
  • Music video is a narrative therefore not reality although it is represented as one.

Ferdinand De Sessure - Semiotics

  • 'What's My Name' contained sexual semiotics such as Rihanna's red hair which symbolises love and passion with the milk being spilled may also represent semen.

Personally, I feel that there is nothing from 'What's My Name' that I would like to include in to our own music video as it wouldn't really suit our drum & bass genre and we would like the narrative to seem fairly realistic.

Christina Aguilera - Not Myself Tonight

Mulvey - Feminist Theory

  • Christina Aguilera is barely dressed throughout the music video showing that she wants to be the subject of male gaze - wanting to be an object with men bowing down to her.

Dyer - Stereotypes

  • Females all half naked - fitting the stereotype that they are all promiscuous although the stereotype is broken by men also being half dressed and the women now seeing them as objects instead.

Baudrillard - Representation/Hyper Reality

  • Video has created a hyper reality that Christina Aguilera is a sexual woman.

Ferdinand De Sessure - Semiotics

  • The frequent use of red with the lipstick and underwear represents love and sex.

Again, there aren't any aspects within this this music video that I would like to include in our own as it wouldn't suit our genre of drum & bass with the use of sexual scenes and semiotics.

My Chemical Romance - Teenagers

Mulvey - Feminist Theory

  • Cheerleaders used as dancers who are there to be looked at - being the object of male gaze.

Dyer - Stereotypes

  • Stereotype of teenagers showing them as being rowdy and reckless.

Baudrillard - Representation/Hyper Reality

  • Shows the hyper reality of teenagers are that they are reckless, violent, dangerous and don't consider their consequences.

Ferdinand De Sessure - Semiotics

  • The use of the gas masks represent war , violence and anarchy.

The stereotypes associated to 'Teenagers' are the ideal stereotypes that I would to include in our music video, although the use of cheerleaders and gas masks wouldn't be as ideal and won't be included.
