Matter and Energy

Comparing

-Compounds

-Mixtures

Mixture: A combination of two or more substances that do not combine chemically but remain the same individual substances.

Compound: A substance made up of two or more different types of atoms bonded together

Similarities: both are formed/made

of two or more substances

Differences:

A compound is more of

a chemical substance

And mixtures are substances in

which you can remove certain parts

(Example: trail mix)

Comparing:

-Compounds

-Elements

Element: A substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance by ordinary chemical changes. Elements consist of only ONE type of atom.

Compound: A substance made up of two or more different types of atoms bonded together.

Examples:

Compound: Dry ice

- Dry ice is really just frozen carbon dioxide, and carbon dioxide

is a compound

Element: Gold

- All the atoms gold contains are the same which makes

gold an element

Comparing:

- Atoms

- Molecules

Atom: the smallest particle of

an element that has the chemical

properties of that element.

Molecule: a group of atoms held

together by covalent bonds so

that they move as a single unit

Examples:

Molecules: Water

- Theses droplets of water are made of water molecules; two hydrogen atom and 1 oxygen atom

Atom: carbon

- Carbon is one of the 3 main atoms.

Proton - found in nucleus, positively charge + + + + + + BALANCED

Neutron - found in nucleus, neutral (no charge)

Electron - electron cloud, negatively charges - - - - - - BALANCED

Bonds:

Ionic: metals with nonmetals - give and take

Covalent: non metals with nonmetals - sharing

Physical Properties: maintains chemical make up

Chemical Properties: chemical identity

Covalent bond:

C: 4

O: 6
