What problems do you think Peekay will face?

Why do you think the book may be called

The Power of One?

Good question

Who are the BOERS?

What does this have to do with The Power of One?

Boer, (Dutch: “husbandman,” or “farmer”), a a Dutch, German, or Huguenot born in South Africa, especially one of the early settlers of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State. Today, descendants of the Boers are commonly referred to as Afrikaners (Encyclopedia Britanica Online).

Peekay is soon sent to a German Boarding School

1930's to 1950's- a generation after the Boer war and on the brink of the Apartheid

In

hisyoung childhood, Peekay is raised by a Zulu nurse

It is a coming of age story.

A coming of age story chronicles the main character's childhood and young adulthood. So, it tells the story of how Peekay grow up.

Can you think of some famous coming of age stories?

Apart- what?

What was the conflict?

Apartheid literally means the condition of being apart. Apartheid "included 317 laws which reserved civil rights for 5 million whites and denied them to 25 million blacks" (Racial Injustice, Apartheid and the Power of the Individual).

"Strategists in the National Party invented apartheid as a means to cement their control over the economic and social system. Initially, aim of the apartheid was to maintain white domination while extending racial separation" (The History of Apartheid in South Africa).

Apartheid was a system of racial segregation enforced through legislation by the National Party governments of South Africa between 1948 and 1994, under which the rights of the majority non-white inhabitants of South Africa were curtailed and white supremacy and Afrikaner minority rule was maintained.

British created concentration camps

"Because The Power of One is set between the years of 1939 and 1951

in South Africa, the emergence of apartheid forms an important part

of its context" (SparkNote Editors).

  • Two political ideologies namely British imperialism and Afrikaner nationalism clashed at the turn of the nineteenth century in South Africa.
  • Britain sought the unification of whole of South Africa under the British flag. The existence of the two Boer republics, the South African Republic (Transvaal) and the Orange Free State, was a stumbling block.
  • The two republics on the other hand wanted to preserve their independence and to build their republics into regional forces. They were therefore not prepared to become part of a united South Africa under British authority.

What will The Power of One be about?

5-8 GOOD sentences

BEFORE World War II

What else?

In 1886 a new phase in the conflict between the two opposing ideologies was reached when gold was discovered on the Witwatersrand in the South African Republic.

And everybody wants gold!

Ideas

In South Africa

to win the war with the Boer (South African Born German and Dutch)

"Despite shocking fatality figures in the concentration camps, the English did nothing to improve the situation, and the English public remained deaf to the lamentations in the concentration camps as thousands of people, especially children, were carried to their graves" (Barnard 7).

But who was there first?

Anglo Boer War

Well, actually the Zulu and other native African tribes were there first. The Dutch settled on their land and then the British wanted that land to be under their flag.

The power

hierarchy ends up

looking something like this...

BRITISH

----------

Boers

-----------------

Zulus and other native tribes

and

Dutch Expansion

  • Nguni peoples (the Zulu, Xhosa, Swazi, and Ndebele) lived near the coast.
  • Others, now known as the Sotho–Tswana peoples (Tswana, Pedi, and Basotho), settled in the Highveld.
  • Today's Venda, Lemba, and Shangaan-Tsonga peoples made their homes in the north-eastern areas of South Africa
