JAMBO!

Tina Wu :)

Summaries/self-created diary entries of Waswahilis based on the information from research! :)

Majadiliano: Talk or discuss.

Waswahili: The Swahili people. This term may refer to the Swahili ethnic group and/or any Swahili speakers.

Safari: Journey.

Finally, the Portuguese forces were driven out of our area! It's now the official hot topic of the neighborhood. Everywhere we go, we hear majadiliano about this. The Portuguese have been trying to control us Waswahilis since the year of 1498, when this guy called Vasco da Gama came here on his safari to wherever he was going. They tried to make us Christians, but we are all faithful Muslims so they never succeeded.

---Aisha Nshimirimana

Aisha: life or live

Nshimirimana: Thank God.

Nshimirimana is a common family name of Swahili-speaking nations, including and especially in Burundi and Rwanda.

A lot of their family names have the suffix of "imana", which refers to "God".

1837---

The Portuguese, after struggling to gain control of the region of the Swahili Coast and convert the Waswahilis into Christians for more than three decades, were finally driven out with the help of Omani Arabs.

There are two sides of the story, however.

You could say that Oman was trying to help the Waswahili get rid of the Portuguese, but it's also right to say that they were just trying to gain more land for themselves, with no "friendly" purposes at all. Some call this a combination of the nations, while others call it a conquest of the Omani forces.

A few nations of the Swahili Coast became a part of the Sultanate of Oman, another Swahili-speaking nation.

The Waswahilis who believe in Islam believe in a strict form of the religion. Most Waswahilis are Muslim, while quite a bit of them are Christian.
