Wisteria Lamp (1902)

Louis Comfort Tiffany

This lamp is in the Art Nouveau style because of the way the lamp looks like a tree. The branches seem to fall down along with the wisterias, giving that look. These are characteristics of Art Nouveau. And the colours of the glass and the lines on the lamp gives it a unique look.

This is one of Gustav's golden paintings during the "golden phase". This painting is in the Art Nouveau style because of the way the branches of the tree are drawn. They are long as they extend out and at the end of the branches, they make a twirl, giving it an Art Nouveau feeling. The patterns on the 2 people are given movement, making it flowing. Introduction

Art Nouveau is a style of art and architecture that originated in Western Europe around 1890 until 1914 when WWI started.

It was also a movement in an attempt to stop looking back in the past for ideas, but instead taking inspiration from what it saw around it, like the natural world. Their philosophy is that art should become part of everyday life. Art should be available to everyone, not just to the rich people.

The main characteristics of this style are its use of long, curvy lines. Those lines are what mainly made up this style. It also included flat, decorative patterns, birds, flowers, insects and women. This was used most often in architecture, interior design, jewelry and glass design, posters, and illustration.

Gustav Klimt

(July 14, 1862 - February 6, 1918)

Gustav Klimt is an Austrian artist and one of the founding members of the Vienna Art Nouveau (Vienna Secession) movement. His works include paintings, murals, sketches, and other art objects. Gustav's works are mostly women and this caused some controversy because of the eroticism. But despite that, his famous works are his golden paintings during the "golden phase" of his life. He wanted to be "free" from traditional academic art, which is one of the philosophies of Art Nouveau.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I think Louis Tiffany best illustrates the Art Nouveau style. The lines are the important part of Art Nouveau and he did the best with those lines with the way he did on his glass works. The use of the colours gave his works a soft, yet bold look into it. His works are very inspired by nature which is part of Art Nouveau. He has also included flat decorative patterns into his work. And he made his art available to everyone, one of the philosophies of Art Nouveau. People can buy his lamps and then art would be part of their lives. He also made a new kind of way to make lamps art. This is why I think Louis Tiffany best illustrates the Art Nouveau style, physically and spiritually.
