In my magazine, I only used one person in my photography throughout my magazine. This is due to the fact that I was unable to find a wide range of people that fitted the 'look' for my magazine. I wanted to find somebody who was Korean or who fit the Korean look in order to be able to accurately represent the sub culture of people who are interested in the
Kpop genre. This conforms to the codes and conventions of
Kpop magazines as they are usually made up of only Korean
people. However, if i was to take part in this task again I
would like to include more people from other backgrounds
in order to showcase more diversity throughout my
magazine.
Throughout the entirety of my magazine I really wanted to showcase my
ability to adapt to the genre. I looked at a lot of other types of kpop
magazines such as ceci in order for design inspiration as I believe that if you follow the same general style while adding your own twists it will make it
unique and interesting. Furthermore, through research i was able to pick out
some techniques that the magazines used and incorporate those into my own design which allowed me to follow the codes and conventions of k pop magazines. For instance i wanted to capture the 'Bedroom wall poster' look
which i saw in some magazine, I did this through the use of an image that I edited in order to give the impression that it is a Polaroid image which
makes my magazine contents page appear a lot more creative and edgy
without straying too far away from the needs of the target audience.
furthermore, I have used a collection of other different images that
I feel also capture this idea of my magazine being quite cool and different. Additionally, I decided to go into a lot of detail in that I didn't leave any part of the page blank or boring as then I would not have been able to portray the over-the-top genre that is Kpop.
In general, my music magazine conforms to the codes and conventions of the Kpop genre. The genre itself is a mix of modern and traditional music of Korea that began its journey to fame in the early 1990s. The artists themselves are perceived to be the 'perfect Korean' with artists being edited to the point that they look almost unrealistic. I attempted at creating this expectation by editing the
images which I took in order to make them appear more professional.
However, in a way, I challenged this expectation as I covered the face
of my artist in order to create a sense of mystery which is not present
in the genre of Kpop. I took inspiration from pop artists such as
'Sia' who do not conform to stereotypes. Personally, i feel
that this idea works really well with the unique and
somewhat crazy genre of kpop. the genre is also
prevalent through the use of 'Kstar' which
is a creative twist on the genre
of Kpop.
The layout of my magazine contents page is one which is very typical for a music magazine. It features a simplistic format which is easy to read and navigate
around the page. It was designed in this way in order for it to be easy on the eye of
the reader so that they're able to get to the page they want to with ease. On a typical music magazine, text is laid out around a main image. This can be seen on my music magazine as there is an image which I edited to become a Polaroid which is surrounded by text. The image that I chose relates to the main feature of my article and also the Image on the front of the magazine.
Furthermore, I also included a dropped capital which I believe
is a common feature of most magazines. This is more of a design
feature but it also catches the attention of the reader as it is
large and bold. i created a separate section for style in the corner
outlined by a dotted boarder. This was something that I had
seen featured in many other Kpop magazines which shows in
a way, i am following the codes and conventions of a kpop magazine.
Also, each title follows the house style of the magazine which is both
aesthetically pleasing for the reader but also gives the magazine
an identity which is a very important feature of any music
magazine as the market is so competitive and is
always changing.

The font that I chose for my magazine were predominantly Serif fonts with the exception of a few sections of the magazine that i used a sans serif. this was in order to make the magazine more appealing to those who appreciate the aesthetic of the kpop genre. Throughout the genre, serif fonts are used an awful lot and i thing this is due to the fact that Kpop magazines tend to be aimed at the middle to high class. The serif font gives the impression of professionalism yet can also be used in the way i have which combines professionalism and the 'retro look' with something very modern like the Kpop genre. I believe that this alone gives my magazine an edge against others however it still encompasses the look of other kpop magazines such as 'ceci', thus following the media codes and conventions of a kpop music magazine.
The font which i chose fot my Mast head and titles is one that is a cross between modern and retro which gives my magazine an interesting look. in addition, I think the contrast of the two colours help to distinguish it from other magazines and the use of two different colours show that my magazine is going to be different from others. this also brings the readers attention to the 'K' representing Kpop in 'Kstar'.
Finally, the use of traditional Korean text 'Hangul' has been used throughout my
magazine in order to highlight the fact that my magazine is something that is
focusing on Korean music. The mix of Korean and English text is a feature
of most Kpop magazines due to the diversity present in Korean so
this therefore means that i am following the codes and
conventions of this particular genre of magazine.
The layout of my magazines front cover is simple and quite typical for that of a music magazine with the masthead along top, a bar code at the bottom and features along the side. In a way this is what you would expect as a reader from any magazine as these are features that come under the codes and conventions of any magazine. However, I feel I have challenged those codes and conventions through the placement of my main image. This is significant because main images tend to be centralised and comprise of a mid-shot. On my magazines front cover, you can see a close-up image which has been placed on the left hand side. This image is placed this way in order to provoke a reaction by the reader. It is my hope that a reader would be intrigued by this as it doesn't follow the typical conventions of a magazine. The way I have placed the image links to the interview with my artist which may entice a possible reader to find out more. furthermore,
I believe that by challenging the codes and conventions really benefit
my magazine as without challenging them, the image would not be so
impacting nor thought provoking . In addition, i decided to overlap the
image over the masthead which really make the magazine feel as if it is
established and official and not amateur. I think that if i hadn't have
done this then the masthead may have distracted the audience
from the main point of focus which should be the main image.
another important aspect of the layout of my magazine is the
'WIN' banner in the top left hand corner, I have incorporated
as in incentive to buy the magazine. This is effective as it is placed in the
top left hand corner which is where people tend to turn the page when
opening a magazine. I believe that this may tempt the reader
to open up the magazine and start reading into it.

The layout of my double page spread goes against the
boundaries of the codes and conventions of most
magazines this is because I wanted to create an interesting
contrast to the rest of the magazine which would entice a
possible reader. I also aimed to create something artistic
and unique to reflect the quirkiness of the artist that I set
out to portray. To start off with i placed images on the top &
bottom halves of the pages. I believe that this gave my
magazine an artistic look which is very interesting in my
opinion. This is very uncommon for a music magazine to do
as most feature either a full face shot or mid shot of the
artist rather than a close up like I used. This image was used in this way in order to
reflect that the artist I 'created' wants to conceal her Identity and I did this in
order to create meaning in a way. furthermore, I feel it creates a sense of
mystery which is a theme that is prevalent throughout my magazine. on
the other hand, my magazine conforms to the codes and conventions
of magazines in that i made the text into columns which is a
standard feature for most magazines. This is neat and
allows text to be read easily.

The content of my magazine, in general, conforms to all the codes and conventions of what you might expect from a kpop magazine. I tried to make the text which I included in my magazine as
interesting as the design of the magazine. Overall, i found this quite a task to do sue to the fact that i feel that i am much better at design than actually creating content. However, this being said I quite enjoyed the challenge of it. I aimed to make the text that I included interesting for the reader as ultimately, if the content is not worth the price you set, then people will refuse to buy it. I achieved this by including a wide variety of topics which cover many peoples interests such as music, fashion, style and celebrity news. The aim of the magazine was to be fun and not
too serious as i feel that i i made the text i included too formal then people would become disconnected from the magazine as they would not feel that it accurately represented kpop or the subculture itself.
In addition, I used a lot of different literacy techniques in order to grab the attention of
my audience. For instance, I used techniques such as alliteration (Seoul Style),
repetition (win win win), short sentences (100 most shocking moments in kpop) and even
text abbreviations (WTF?). All together I feel that without these, my magazine would not
be successful as a Kpop magazine. These are typical writing techniques that you may
find in any magazine, thus conforming to the codes and conventions of magazines. Also, I
decided to layout my text in columns as this is standard for any magazine to follow.
Finally, it was very important to consider what my audience would be interested
in when creating my magazine. if i hadn't then the magazine would not be
fit for its purpose as it would lack representation of the Kpop fan
base. To gain an idea of what the fans may like I had to
do some research into the genre in a lot more
depth which really helped me when
creating.
