Birthday!

Felix-Joseph Barbelin was born on May 30,1808 in France.

Barbellin was the oldest of 6 children. His uncle introduced him to theology and philosophy at the age of 13.

Jesuit

In 1831 Felix entered the "The Society Of Jesus," to become a Jesuit. This would later help Felix as he decides to start a University.

Jesuits are also called, "God's Marines," as they take part in bringing people to christ. The society was started by Ignatius of Loyala after a revelation he had while at war.

When he came to America,Barbelin taught French at Georgetown for a number of years when he came to America. Then became pastor at the Holy Trinity Church while in Georgetown.

Felix left Georgetown for Philadelphia in 1838 to pastor at a Catholic church for 25 years.

After spreading the word for 25 years, Felix felt compelled that it was time for him to start his own church. Already in connect with the Catholic society, they decided to search for a place to build their structure.

Before starting construction on the church, Barbelin founded the St. Joseph's Hospital. The hospital was built around 1849 and was used to aid the fleeding immigrants from the Potatoe Famine going on in Ireland. This was the base where he got his money to help construct the church.

Money

To get the rest of the funding for the Church, many people went door to door asking for donations.

The man by the name of Ferdinand

Durang was appointed architect of the building. He was known as one of the premier architects during that time.

Ferdinand is known for the gothic style of architecture he puts into his works on building.

The majority of the building of the building was constructed of Wissahickon schist, a type of stone found locally. Sprinkles of limestone were added to finish of the construction.

At the time the church was one of the only English- speaking mass for Catholics where worship was permitted by law. Any other catholics caught worshipping were prosecuted.

If Some of the members were out of a home the Pastors would allow them to use the church as there home untill they found them a home.

The church's congragation was mainly of Irish and black despite the French pastor's who ran the church. The blacks who attended the church were actually slaves who's owners felt they needed to be "cleansed."

All of these profound accomplishments led Felix to establish St. Joseph University being founded on September 15th 1851. Shortly after the hospital was created.

The Church had gone through many renovations since its opening late 1800s.

To fit the oncoming of students, the Church was eventually converted to a dormitory when Felix founded St. Joesph University. Parts were still used for worship untill they finished renovations and turned the space into classrooms.

After St. Joseph University was founded, the old church got named Barbelin Hall in honor of Felix. Barbelin Hall is what you see today as you past down City Line Ave.

The deminsions of the building are 76 by 75.

Georgetown is also a Jesuit founded university.

Jesuits are evangelistic preachers who

who spread the word of Jesus Christ.

Jesuits are referred to as, "God's Marines.

The Barbelin Hall has a gothic structure with a basement and attic. The gothic implements are used to scare off evil spirits. Barbelin Hall was finished completely in 1927.
