Christmas: How We Decorate

Christmas

  • We leave out cookies and beer for Santa Claus
  • Before bed, we read The Night Before Christmas
  • The Christmas celebrations start the day after Thanksgiving
  • "Black Friday": Stores have big sales. Many people go shopping for Christmas presents because gifts are very cheap
  • In the weeks before Christmas day, people decorate their homes with Christmas lights and a Christmas tree.
  • People send their friends and families Christmas cards
  • Most people get off from work or school a few days before Christmas and don't go back until after New Years
  • People make and decorate Christmas cookies to give to friends
  • On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, people have big feasts with their families and sometimes go to church
  • There are many classic movies that we watch every Christmas
  • People decorate their houses with scary decorations
  • They hollow out pumpkins and carve faces and put candles inside them. These are called jack-o-lanterns.
  • Children dress up in costumes and go trick-or-treating: They visit their neighbors and ask for candy
  • Adults dress up and go to parties. Usually there is a costume contest. The person with the best, funniest, or scariest costume wins a prize.

Christmas: How We Celebrate in my Family

Christmas Eve

Thanksgiving

  • My family and my uncle's family go out to eat at a Japanese restaurant
  • The day after Thanksgiving, we decorate the house with lights and a tree
  • My dad and I read A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
  • My mom and I bake Christmas cookies
  • Thanksgiving comes from when the Pilgrims came to America in the 1600s.
  • They didn't know how to care for the animals or grow their food, so the Native Americans taught them how
  • The next year, to thank the Native Americans, they had a big feast
  • Today, we celebrate Thanksgiving on the 4th Thursday of November
  • We eat a big turkey and have a big feast with our families
  • It is a holiday to remember to be thankful for what we have: So we spend time with family and eat lots of food
