MDG News Reports

Goal #1: http://www.siasat.com/english/news/earning-less-rs-1000-uae-puts-you-below-poverty-line

This article addresses the fact that if you earn less than 80 dirham (≈ 21.78 USD), then you’re below the poverty line in UAE. UAE’s is a rich nation that is one of the largest oil producers. The main cause of poverty in this country comes from the lavish lifestyle that many people live.

Probability of Success

100%

The UAE has already achieved this goal. Their focus regarding this goal, should now be to possibly lowering the percentage of citizens living under the poverty line. If this continues to lower, then they will continue to thrive as a country. They should also consider providing more financial support for their citizens and corporations.

GOAL 2:

Achieve Universal Primary Education

Target 2.a:

Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling

GOAL 1:

Eradicate extreme poverty & hunger

Target 1.a :

Halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people whose income is less than one dollar a day

Target 1.b :

Achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all, including women and young people

Target 1.c :

Halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people who suffer from hunger

The UAE has a population of 8.1 million. As of 2012, the percentage of people living below the poverty line is at 19.5%. The GDP per capita is approximately 48,800 USD. This ranks the country in 13th place out of the top 20 countries for GDP per capita ranking. The country has worked hard to improve the lives of their citizens by starting many programs. Some of the programs include financial and material support for fishermen, providing water and electricity services.

Probability of Success

98%

The UAE has completed the target goal. I gave them a 95% as their probability of success, due to the consideration of those children that won't attend school for reasons regarding health, poverty, etc. The organization Dubai Cares, works in the UAE as well as other countries to help poor children get an education.

GOAL 4:

Reduce Child Mortality

The target for this goal was to be able to have boys and girls complete primary schooling. The enrollment percentage of boys and girls in primary education in the UAE is 95.1%. The percentage of students in grades 1-5 is 99.1%. Adding to the positivity, the literacy rate is 77.9%.

Target 4.a:

Reduce by two-thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate

Goal #2: http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/dubai-cares-achieves-objective-of-educating-a-million-poor-children

This article highlights the success of the organization Dubai Cares. Their goal was to provide primary education for children in poor countries, and they’ve reached that goal. In about 2 months, they raised over 3.4 Billion dirham (≈ 925 million USD). They hope to continue their objective of helping children, and hope to raise more funds to provide the necessary support.

Probability of Success

95%

Although the UAE has already worked really hard to come close to achieving this goal, there are still some issues. The cultural differences, traditions and observances will possibly restrain the UAE's ability to achieve complete gender equality.

The UAE has already fully completed this goal. They've worked to hard to pay attention to improving the maternal health. This is in part due to their focus on improving their country's health. The hospitals and other primary care locations provide maternal and child health support.

GOAL 3:

Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women

Target 3.a:

Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education, preferably by 2005, and in all levels of education no later than 2015

GOAL 5:

Improve Maternal Health

The mortality rate of children under 5 years old 12/1,000 live births. The main cause of the child mortality rate in this country, are car crashes. These accidents account for 63% of deaths in children in the UAE. Besides these accidents, the UAE has grown in their health care sector, which helps to provide health care resources for the entire country.

Target 5.a:

Reduce by three quarters, between 1990 and 2015, the maternal mortality ratio

The UAE has greatly improved their gender equality issues. There are many areas of society where women have stronger ratings/percentages than men. For example, the literacy rate for women is 81.7% compared to 76.1% for men. The number of jobs working in the public sector has also started to increase. The UAE is one of the countries that has promoted the need for gender equality.

Probability of Success

HIV/AIDS isn't such an epidemic in this country. The prevalence rate for this disease is about 0.2%. As for Malaria, in the past year there have been more cases in the UAE. This is mainly caused by the large numbers of people coming to the UAE from other countries for work. However, the local transmission of malaria ended with the last reported case being in 1997.

90%

The UAE has worked to improve the health care sector of their country. They should focus on lowering the traffic death percentage, by implementing a law that requires safety seats and restraints for children.

100%

The UAE has achieved this goal! The government has many hospitals, health care locations, and small clinics open to care for their country. They should continue to provide the necessary support for women, as well as providing the care they need in caring for themselves and their children.

Probability of Success

95%

HIV/AIDS is not an issue for this country, due to the low prevalence rate. Malaria hasn't been contracted locally since last reported in 1997. So, the main concern is to treat those foreign workers that are entering the country. Since they're the cause of the recent malaria outbreaks, the health providers should pay close attention to that. It would be smart to implement some rule that would require tests for the disease before these workers enter the UAE. This would help the rest of the country stay safe, and avoid any type of repercussions.

GOAL 6:

Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other Diseases

Target 6.a:

Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS

Target 6.b:

Achieve, by 2010, universal access to treatment for HIV/AIDS for all those who need it

Target 6.c:

Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the incidence of malaria and other major diseases

Probability of Success

Goal #3: http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/uae-leads-arab-world-in-gender-equality

This article focuses on the strides that the UAE has made in improving gender equality in their country. The literacy rate for women is higher than men in the country, and women also hold positions in many different careers (health sector, public sector).

95%

I believe that there's a strong possibility that the UAE will be able to fully achieve this MDG. They're work around their region, as well as with other countries, shows their strides with global partnership. Continuing to provide support and working directly with relief organizations as well as others could help them achieve this goal by 2015.

The UAE is trying their best to achieve this goal. However, due to the growing population and the increasing urban and industrial growth, there are some issues that may arise. The water resources could also begin to suffer due to the water consumption. A good point to make though, is that the percentage of the population with access to improved drinking water resources is 100%.

One of the main indicators of the UAE's path to achieving this goal, would be their humanitarian work. They've worked to provide help for many countries that are in need. They UAE has also partnered with many different organizations to improve the lives of those in their country, as well as others.

GOAL 7:

Ensure Environmental Sustainablity

Target 7.a:

Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programmes and reverse the loss of environmental resources

Target 7.b:

Reduce biodiversity loss, achieving, by 2010, a significant reduction in the rate of loss

Target 7.c:

Halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation

Target 7.d:

By 2020, to have achieved a significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers

Probability of Success

90%

This country has some minor setbacks that may hinder them from achieving this goal. If they work to improve the environmental effects, and works to maintain clean, abundant water resources, then they might be able to fully achieve this goal. They should consider how fast their population is growing, and how their expansions take a toll on the surrounding environment.

GOAL 8:

Develop a Global Partnership for Development

Target 8.A:

Develop further an open, rule-based, predictable, non-discriminatory trading and financial system

Target 8.B:

Address the special needs of the least developed countries

Target 8.C:

Address the special needs of landlocked developing countries and small island developing States (through the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States and the outcome of the twenty-second special session of the General Assembly)

Target 8.D:

Deal comprehensively with the debt problems of developing countries through national and international measures in order to make debt sustainable in the long term

Target 8.E:

In cooperation with pharmaceutical companies, provide access to affordable essential drugs in developing countries

Target 8.F:

In cooperation with the private sector, make available the benefits of new technologies, especially information and communications

Goal 4: http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/emergencies/road-crashes-main-cause-of-child-death-in-uae-1.1028566

This article points out the cause of child death in the UAE. 63% of child deaths are caused by traffic accidents. There is only one law requiring the use of child restraints/seats. The article addresses the problems that cause the accident fatalities as well as mentions the many safety campaigns that the UAE has regarding vehicle safety.

Goal 5: http://www.emro.who.int/media/news/saving-lives-dubai-28-january.html

This article focuses on the importance of improving both maternal and child health. It

points out that the Ministers of health from different countries in the middle eastern/mediterranean region met to discuss the issues regarding this topic.

Goal 6: http://www.khaleejtimes.com/kt-article-display-1.asp?xfile=data%2Fnationhealth%2F2012%2FJune%2Fnationhealth_June45.xml&section=nationhealth

This article discusses the rise in malaria cases in the UAE. The main reason for the increase in the number of cases, is due to the people that are in the UAE for work. The last reported Malaria case locally transmitted in the UAE was in 1997.

Goal 7: http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/environment/uae-committed-to-sustainable-environment-1.1085838

This article discusses the UAE’s commitment to improving the environment. They briefly

point out the ‘Green Economy Initiative’ that goes hand in hand with a sustainable environment and a thriving economy.

Goal 8: http://www.ocfa.gov.ae/En/MediaCenter/OCFANews/Pages/UAEdisbursesAED774billioninforeignaidin2011,benefitting128countries,andcommitsAED6749millionforfutureprojects.aspx
