To accept a bribe is dishonest. Your honesty is like virginity - it can only be lost once.

In July 2011 several South Sudan reporters confessed to the Sudan Tribune they had witnessed colleagues taking payments in return for writing positive stories.

How does this affect us?

  • Loss of credibility
  • Closing of News of the World
  • News Corp owns news outlets in the US (Fox News, NY Post, & the Wall St. Journal)
  • News Corp and its executives might face charges under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
  • Other US News Corps. have started investigating possible scandals from the past.

Started with an investigation on alleged phone hacking by journalists employed by the company. Soon found out that journalists bribed police officers for disclosed information.

What is bribery?

In a strict sense, bribery is the act of giving or receiving money or other forms of payment in return for favorable feedback or press.

Journalist Andrew Hill admits to accepting bribes, but feels they are a part of the business aspect of journalism.

But Why?

Used as a popular journalism technique since the seventeenth century, bribes are now seen as unethical.

Journalists are often underpaid and overworked, making them more vulnerable to bribes or willing to bribe others for information.
