I hit the ground running when I came back to MDIBL for my second term. I had to plan the first annual meeting for the parthers! A major new skill I acquired as an AmeriCorps Environmental Educator was EVENT PLANNING. I planned the whole FBP annual meeting, from invitations to food and presentations. I invited the media and also wrote my first press-release as a follow-up after the meeting.

Because I have such a difficult time explaining exactly what I do as an AmeriCorps Environmental Educator at MDIBL, I've defaulted to saying simply, "I help document and facilitate stakeholder communication and the conservation action planning process for a group called the Frenchman Bay Partners." That usually interests people a lot, if only because they have no idea what I said.

As I said earlier, my work on FBP communications includes working on...

The FBP website, Facebook page, and new Twitter!

The partners had a lot going on in a short period of time, so it seemed prudent to get a few newsletters out while a lot was happening; plus, the group historically had a lull in the summer months. I got the opportunity to write my first newsletter articles, and teach myself the ins and outs of Constant Contact e-newsletter software.

I also co-wrote an abstract about our eelgrass nutrient experiment to be published in the MDIBL Bulletin:

I had a great time over the course of my year at the MDI Bio Lab as an Environmental Educator with the Maine Conservation Corps. It was probably the single most helpful and useful experience I've had to date, career-wise. I've had the chance to try out a variety of projects and activities, and managed to get a depth of experience in several different fields: marine ecology, environmental education, and conservation planning. There wasn't a single day I didn't feel that I was getting things done!

I believe my experience as an Environmental Educator with the Maine Conservation Corps will continue to help me throughout the course of my career.

MCF 610 Project Grant

Biological Laboratory

I met a few times with Bridie and the clam harvesters on the Regional Shellfish Committee to plan for the grant proposal. I took meeting minutes and then did some data mining about closure information from the DMR to create rough estimates for closed mudflat valuations. All of my work on the grant supported my economics project research.

Key Stakeholder Interviews

I assisted Bridie with interviews with key stakeholders for her dissertation research. I developed economics-focused questions in order to aid my own research. This term, I got the opportunity to put to work all of the training I did in my previous term on human subjects research. I cultivated my real-time transcription skills, too. I've become quite the speedy typist!

Frenchman Bay Economics Report

I had some major accomplishments around the CEHL this term, too.

I wrote an economics report for Frenchman Bay to give the Frenchman Bay Partners a resource to use in their efforts to bridge the gap between social and ecological realms of their bay planning effort. It was my goal to provide them with a talking point or a conversation starter as they transition into thinking about alternative funding sources for their work, as well as market-based solutions.

I wrote a Norcross Wildlife Foundation grant proposal for the CEHL--the first one I've ever written! As a part of that process, I also wrote a report out on the previous Norcross grant. This was a really valuable experience.

I planned a Mussel Harvester Appreciation and Planning Event, at which Jane Disney presented a letter to DMR Commissioner Patrick Keliher in recognition of the help mussel harvesters have given us over the years with eelgrass restoration. Out of that event came a GIS map of the proposed eelgrass restoration areas signed by local mussel harvesters representative of every processor of bottom-dredge mussels in Maine.
