European Trade With China(1400):
- Begins with the Chinese Economy
- The Chinese rulers welcomed the chance to learn the chinese arts.
- European scholars made an impression on China.
Japan:
- Welcomed people from the west unlike china
- In 1543 Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch & English
people reached Japan
- They arrived in Japan when it was struggling for power
- They adapted the western weponry which helped them
gain power and restore order.
- Some of the Japanese didnt like the foreiners and saw them as
threats
- The Tokugawa persecuted the christians by killing them off
- After that they blocked all trade routes except 2 Dutch ships a year
to hear about world events
- They remained this way (in isolation) for more then 200 years!
What happened in the Isolation:
- internal trade
- art
- literature
- cities grew (in size & importance)
- gained wealth & status
Matteo Ricci:
- Studied Chinese
- Impressed the Chinese rulers with his knowledge
of European science
- 30 years of being in China he translated 5 European books
into Chinese
- Died in 1610
- Much of Europes knowledge came from Matteo's writtings
Kangxi: (1661-1722)
- He was a Leader
- He was an administrator/ military leader
- Extended Chinese power into central Asia
- Promoted Chinese culture
- He had the longest throne (61 years)
Qianlong: (1736-1796)
- Expanded China's borders to
rule the largest area in the nations history
- Retired after 60 years because he didnt
want to rule longer then his father.
- This period was called: Kang Qian Sheng Shi.
Crops :
- New crops from the Americans had been introduced to China(potatoes nd corn)
- They boosted farm output
- The result of this was population boom that had rose from 140 million in 1740 to over 300 million in the 1800's
- Silk and cotton industries expanded
- As the internal trade grew so did the demand for chinese goods all over the world!
Government:
- They adopted the confucian system of government
- For each government position there was 2 people,one Manchu and one Chinese
- This period was called the T-peiod
- this was a period o 100% Japanism, extreme conservatism in social policy
