A Room of One's Own
Virginia Woolf (1882-1941), English intellectual and fiction author
Her essay about
women fiction writers
First published in 1929
Why was there no
female Shakespeare?
Limitations of women writers?
Women need education
/ access to education
Women writers need
financial means
of their own
Women need
spare time for writing
Women writers need their
own designated working space
Actually this sounds quite similar to what you need for :
Editing Wikipedia
This is all
rather
time consuming
And you will need access to information resources
as well as to a computer
which is
connected to the internet
Just as in 1929, women today often lack spare time,
dedicated work space and equipment, as women still bear the greater part of household chores and attending to their children, while being increasingly employed in full time jobs.
So maybe it is no surprise that there are only few women active in Wikipedia?
But women are indeed very active
on quite a number of internet projects!
These projects are
Make Wikipedia visually more appealing! (A good example for such an attempt is the new Teahouse)
When introducing women to Wikipedia in workshops, talks, or other events, put some focus on the less time consuming ways of participating (why not start with some weeding activities, that require no research at all and are immediately rewarding)
Make women aware that there are great ways to be creative and express your personality in Wikipedia - Wikipedia is more than the article namespace and your POV is very welcome on talk pages of articles, users and project pages
