What Are They?

Underground movements against ruling groups by non-ruling groups during WWII

Resistance movements occurred in every occupied country

Several dozens of resistance movements occurred in WWII

It was difficult to have full-scale resistance without being caught and shut down, so there were many individual ones

Different Kinds of Resistance Movements:

  • Non-cooperation through nonviolence
  • Propoganda
  • Outright warfare/attempts to recapture lost territory
  • Assisting the "enemy"

FRENCH RESISTANCE

France was taken over by Germany in 1940

The French Resistance was vital in aiding the Allies

  • Provided intelligance reports on Germany in France
  • Disrupted German supply, communication, and operations in France

French Resistance intelligence on Germany led to and aided the carrying out of D-Day

Yugoslav Partisans - largest resistance movement

  • Yugoslavia invaded by Germany in 1941; the Yugoslavian Communists organized and fought the occupants. They aided the Allied powers, and vice versa.
