Its a boy girl thing
Like 13 going on 30, its a boy girl thing is related to the genre comedy,
but can also relate to drama and romance, This making its a boy girl thing
being an example of a rom com which is a hybrid genre and is a recent
popular hit and is a part of generic cycle. The generic cycle
being the body swap theme which has introduced an interest with audiences
generic conventions create audience expectations. Generic conventions
are what the audience expect to see and feel. Pleasures of difference
place a refreshing twist on the gnere.
A form of generic convention is character types, the audience expects
to see a hero and a villain as the typical character types. But this could be
represent from both the main characters point of view, they could both see
each other as the villain and themselves as the hero. For example the girl
is struggling with the sport but its important to the guy so he may feel she is
the villain and ruining it for him on purpose.
Seeing the change is a typical narrative set piece as we see the pair individually
get struck by lightning and waking up to being in someone elses house leading
to them discovering where there body is and the person whos in it.
another typical narrative set piece is someone finding someone who they
enjoy being with and love to be around and we see there chemistry on screen
and epect them to be together at the end. This is relevant in the trailer because
we see the two helping eachother, smiling which could indicate to the audience
that something is going to happen between them.
Genre
Its a boy girl thing does have repertoire of elements like other trailers such as Freaky friday with the idea of waking up to the change and the traditional scream with panic on there faces which makes the film funny. But also the seeing of your old self like the characters do in this case being looking through the window to the neighbours house. This idea avoids the traditional wish to change storyline making the narrative less predictable.
Another typical scene is used in the trailer this being the girly sleep
over, but this is done with a twist as the boy is in the females body and finds this the best opportunity to 'check the girls out' , this gives the trailer humour and dominant ideology of what people think teenage boys are like. But also how the two characters find there situation useful at some points.
A major element of many films is people falling in love, this is is displayed when we see the chemistry between the two people for example smiling and help eachother get out of this mess but also gets the audiences hopes up.
Another major repetoire of elements is the embarrassing moments which are not in peoples comfort zone, for example the boy in the females body getting waxed this gives the film humour but also could make the audience cringe and emphathise with the character. But also the typical girl in a boys body having to do a sport as there is dominant ideology that males are better at sport.
Another theorist is Claude levi Strauss who developed the
idea of binary oppositions. A binary opposition is opposites
such as good vs evil.
In the trailer at the start is boy vs girl, the rivalry between the two
characters gives a refreshing change from parents, hero vs enemy etc.
But adds to traditional ideas children have that other members of the
opposite sex are the enemy or worse than them. This will help sell the film
as it will make the audience gain interest and join the battle girls vs boys.
Another narrative theory is Vladimir Propp and he came up with Character
types such as the hero, villain, heroine, helper, donor and mentor.
The character types in the trailer are what the audience expects
to see this being a hero and a villain as the typical character types. But there
isn't any particular a definate character types but both the main characters point of view, they could both see each other as the villain and themselves as the hero. For example the girl is struggling with the sport but its important to the guy so he may feel she is the villain and ruining it for him on purpose. On the other hand
the boy in a girls body drinks alcohol infront of a popular guy who is shocked, this is ruining her reputation.
Themes are used quite a lot in movies, but in its a boy girl thing
the main themes are hope, love, reputation these are apparent because
the audience feel hope that the pair will fall in love but also the characters
hope they will change back.
But each of the characters reputation is on the line because of the struggle
they have been through trying to be someone else this suggesting that
reputation means a lot to the characters but the only way to get back is
to understand eachothers way of life.
Narrative
Non-diegetic- This is sound what cant be heard by character,
so in the trailer the lightning at the start is not heard heard by
the characters, this is interesting that they didnt hear it but maybe
it was done to make it look like things were out of the ordinary.
The trailer uses the enigma code, an enigma intrigues the audience to watch and gives a sense of mystery. This is shown in its a boy girl thing by not revealing a solution to the film so the audience feel it is a must film to see to find out the outcome. But also creating mystery can make the trailer more interesting to watch and wont be predictable.
The narrative analyses how the stories are told and structured. All narratives have some form of structure in this case the trailer has a three part structure (Todorov theory).
The film isn't in a reasonable linear narrative order as the catalyst of the disequilibrium is shown first this is when the thunder storm is shown attacking the two houses but then the equilibrium is in place when we are introduced to the characters bodies but not the real them. The equilibrium doesnt reveal
much about them such as there names, hobbies or personality
But then the disequilibrium is upset by the use of the prop an alarm clock this is simalar to 13 going on 30 this could be because its a good way to show that they have woken up to reality and that it wasnt a dream and during the disequilibrium the two characters meet by looking out the windows and seeing eachother. Then the pair have to live as eachother to get out of the mess there in.
But the film doesnt reveal a solution such as changing back to themselves this gives the film mystery and encourages them to watch the whole film to find out what happens next
Diegetic - sounds what can be heard by the characters.
Clock alarm- This is the rude awakening for the characters which
is used to bring them back to reality and realise the change. It also
represents the beginning of a strange day.
younger sibling voice- The voice of the younger sibling adds to the
weirdness of whats going on for the teenager, but also reveals more
about where they are and who they are.
school bell- The school bell could create a terrifying atmosphere for the
teenagers having to go through the day being eachother and doing things
out there comfort zone but also could be used that reality has hit them and
they have to just get on with the day.
Voice over
The voice over of the narrator adds to the
trailer to help tell the story and make it more
understandable at what is going on. Escpecially
when there is no communication at the start. It
also adds tension making the film more dramatic.
Sound
technical codes
The main title matches the
other taglines with the use of
colour and font style.
This is good as it ties the whole
sequence together.
tilt shot- when the girl in the boys
body is crying and the teacher comes
to talk to her the use of a tilt shot is
displayed this makes the audience look up
to the teacher and that we are the person
who beens through the transformation
so we are looking from her perspective.
Graphic design
In terms of facial expression when the characters
has transformed and wakes up the shock
what comes on their faces does make the film
more realistic as we can see their emotion and
how it has affected them. I will have to work on this
when I start mine.
These taglines build the story
up introducing the narrative
and the story line the colours
are blue and pink which go
with the boy girl ideology theme
Use of camera
Clothing
We see that the female before had a
girly style with her clothing but then
when the change occurred the boy put
decides to wear a lot darker clothing
such as green and blue this
symbolises how the audience can tell
the change between the characters as well
as how they act.
Whereas the girl as the male wears are lot
more smarter dressed up clothing such as shirts
and jumpers this shows she likes a more sophisticated
look rather than sport wear.
Mise en scene
The first subtitle 'the wrong' creates mystery as it doesnt reveal the next word until it has
shown more clips. The colours represent
a boy and girl with the blue and pink. This
contrasts well with the white writing
The first main location is
outside the two characters houses
which is significant because this is
where the audience see the lightning
striking the houses so this location
is valuable as it set off the chain of
change.
The school is another location used
throughout the trailer because this
is where the sporting activities, socialising
with friends take place for the teenagers
and spend most of there time at school
this is also a typical narrative set piece location
There is a use of a tracking shot
when the boy is walking across the field
when playing sport its like the audience is one
of the players getting into the game and looking at
him and seeing his reactions which are very feminine
Editing
The use of a split screen
to show the reactions of
the pair is a good idea
as it takes less off the overall
trailer time but also we can see there
reactions at the exact same moment in
time. I like this use of editing because
it could represent only a small gap between
eachother
when the girls at the sleepover are
waxing the 'males' female body the use of
transition zoom out makes us feel like we
are the girls backing away from him when he
is in pain, which makes the audience feel part of the film
