Includes Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, but a growing number of new communities and platforms want to help freelancers thrive in the media marketplace.

There are 2 main models or types of crowdfunding. The first is what’s called donation-based funding. The birth of crowdfunding has come through this model, where funders donate via a collaborative goal based process in return for products, perks or rewards.

The second and more recent model is investment crowdfunding, where businesses seeking capital sell ownership stakes online in the form of equity or debt. In this model, individuals who fund become owners or shareholders and have a potential for financial return, unlike in the donation model.

Others Avenues to Publish your Work

The Tyee, a news organization based in British Columbia, has also embraced crowdsourced funding, but without having to go through a third party. It has offered 16 reporting fellowships totaling $80,000 entirely funded by readers, providing each fellow with a $5,000 stipend for B.C.-based investigations and solutions-oriented journalism. The Tyee also fundraised $25,000 before the start of the 2009 B.C. election and $18,000 in 2011 for more provincial election-coverage resources.

Contributoria, a new site backed by Guardian Media Group, is an attempt to build an open community that allows journalists to collaborate on and crowdfund high-quality journalism.

Three Roads to Monetizing Your Work

New Avenues of Revenue for Journalists

Self-Publish

Traditional

Vourno.com provides journalists (Vournos) with the tools to raise capital for the creation and production of quality, newsworthy content and gives the public (Pubs) the ability to directly fund, share, watch and rate those stories. Any news story created by a journalist can be uploaded, showcased and distributed on our network.

Traditional

In the past traditional media outlets were the only place communication professionals could publish their work.

Self-Publishing

Spot.us is an open source project, to pioneer “community funded reporting.” Through Spot.Us the public can commission journalists to do investigations on important and perhaps overlooked stories.

Kickstarter is a site where creative projects raise donation-based funding. These projects can range from new creative products, like an art installation, to a cool watch, to funding your documentary film. It’s not for businesses, causes, charities, or personal financing needs. Kickstarter is one of the earlier platforms, and has experienced strong growth and many break-out large campaigns in the last few years.

UPDATE: Hundreds of Kickstarter-funded films now available on iTunes!

While Kickstarter maintains a tighter focus and curates the creative projects approved on its site, Indiegogo approves donation-based fundraising campaigns for most anything — music, hobbyists, personal finance needs, charities and whatever else you could think of (except investment). They have had international growth because of their flexibility, broad approach and their early start in the industry.
