The Moran Clan
Voodoo is a religion that originated in West Africa and then spread to the Americas and the Caribbean, where it is thought to be a combination of various African, Catholic and Native American traditions. It is practiced around the world but there is no accurate count of how many people are Voodooists.
Voodoo has no scripture or world authority. It is community-centered and supports individual experience, empowerment and responsibility.
Voodoo is different in different parts of the world, and varies from community to community. This is mostly about Voodoo in New Orleans and Haiti.
Voodoo embraces and encompasses the entirety of human experience. It is practiced by people who are imperfect and may use religion for their own purposes.
What do they Believe in?
Those who practice Voodoo believe that there is a visible and an invisible world, and that these worlds are intertwined. Death is a transition to the invisible world, so our predecessors are still with us in spirit. They watch over and inspire us.
WHY IS IT CHARACTERIZED AS EVIL?
HUFFINGTON POST
One of the only successful slave revolutions in modern history occurred in Haiti in the late 1700s. Slaves of African descent overthrew European rulers and took control of the country. Many slaves were Voodooists, and some of their military leaders were priests who inspired and organized their communities to fight for freedom. The Haitian Revolution provoked fear in other European and American colonies that were reliant on vast numbers of slaves as plantation labor. The imagery and vocabulary of Voodoo (and other Afro-Caribbean religions) became threatening and ingrained in those cultures as something horrifying, associated with bloodshed and violence. It was brutally repressed in most places. It became taboo.

Differences
Voodoo in New Orleans practiced like it is in Africa or Haiti?
No, not very much at all. Voodoo in Africa and Haiti has maintained much of its original structure and orthodoxy, whereas Voodoo in New Orleans is more of a folk religion composed of European, indigenous American, and, most especially, African cultural elements.
New Orleans Voodoo is associated with memorable personalities such as Dr. John and Marie Laveau who were responsible for maintaining the African spiritual presence in an environment which was almost always hostile to it.
Many of today's priests and priestesses in New Orleans are finding their way back to the original form of practicing African religion through initiations in both Africa and Haiti.

What is a Houngan?
A Houngan, also spelled Oungun or Ongun, is a Voodoo Priest. Literally, this is derived from a Haitian Creole term meaning "Spirit Master." The term denotes the ability of the Houngan to communicate with the multitude of spirits, or Loas, that reside in the unseen world. The Houngan is the highest ranking individual in the Voodoo tradition, and each community, or Hounfor, will have its own Houngan. Houngan refers to males, while the female equivalent is a Mambo or Manbo.
What is a Bokur?
A Bokur is a essentially a black magician, or someone who casts curses, hexes, and other harmful spells. Most Bokurs are in fact Houngans, but not all Houngans are Bokurs. What this means is that some ordained Houngans will cast harmful spells - taking on the role of the Bokur, but some also refuse to do so. Bokur is essentially the title given to the Voodoo Priest who is practicing black magic at the time.
Who/What are Loas?
Loas are spiritual beings that intercede between God and man, and between the spiritual and physical worlds. Most Loas are very helpful, but some can be mischievous and tricky to deal with. It should be noted that Loas are not good or evil per se, as with the angel and demon paradigm found in many religions.
Voodooists develop relationships with the Loa to seek their counsel and help with concerns in the visible world.
Loa can be known as Archetypes of different personalities.
