The crack of a whip is actually a sonic boom.
The reason why you don't hear a sonic boom when you fire a gun is because the gun is so loud that the sonic boom is covered up by the explosion of the gun powder
How sonic booms work
Sonic booms are created when an object goes faster than sound so you see it pass then you here the noise. Sound travels at around 330 meters per second.
Visual apperance
Sonic booms appear to create smoke but since the object is moving faster than sound the pressure behind it drops and in the process the temperature also drops which cause the humidity to condense into water vapor which creates a cloud.
History of sonic Booms
The first sonic booms where created by whips and they have no confirmed history but they were definitely made before 1650.
Recently planes and guns have broken the sound barrier and in 1997 the Thrust SCC was the first car to break the sound barrier
