Q7: Looking back at your preliminary

task, what do you feel you have learnt

in the progression from it to the full

product?

To make our Prelim video of Room 333 we first did a storyboard and planned each and every shot including the camera angles.

However, we didn't add the credits.

this was a problem as when it came

to editing it took long because we didn't have a clue where to put the credits.

We made sure we added the credits

when we done our final thriller storyboard

so it make it easier for us when it comes

to editing.

As our prelim was done in college with

a limited time we used one of the class

room to shoot it. This class had advantages

as it had curtains, a green screen and

spotlights.

We cleared the room and setted it up placing a table, chairs and few props including a fan. We turned of the main lights and switched on the spotlights as it would focus on the actors and represent them well.

ROOM 333 SETTING

We think this worked really well as it

went with the interrogation scene and

most of the feedback we got, majority of

it was positive feedback of the setting.

For our thriller we had to find a good

location that would suit our crime genre.

We thought to have a house as it would

look realistic with the investigation scene.

Baris came up with his sisters house

as it local and available.

With planning location we learnt that it's

better organising sooner or later, its good

to have something rather than nothing.

For our Prelim task I guess we got lucky

with the setting however we did do alot to

make it look realistic.

As for our Prelim we had to make do with the props we had. Although they were enough to make the interrogation scene real, we did feel we could have done better.

So for the thriller we sorted out the props before hand. We managed to get hold of yellow tapes, this made it look like an crime scene. We made fake blood which looked realistic. Also we lined out a chalk body with talcum poweder as the chalk didnt show, simply to make it look like a crime scene.

PROPS

CAMERA SKILLS

When we made our Prelim we had problems getting the right shots such as match cutting and panning. Also the over the shoulder shots was seen to be quite difficult as we couldn't put together the actions.

We tried to do match cuts and in our Prelim you can tell is was a beginners shot. The match cuts did improve and was used in the thriller.

FOCUS

In our Prelim this was one of the thing that we couldn't get right, infact we didn't really realise when it came to editing.

So for our thriller we made sure the focus was right before we started filming and we were more confident with using it.

The over the shoulder shot was probably the only shot that we all felt most comfortable doing from the start. It worked well for both Room 333 and Exhibit A.

MISE EN SCENE

For our Prelim video thhere wasn't much thought on the costumes, also we had a limited amount of time. Because of the costumes our Prelim didnt seem realistic.

As you can see our actors are wearing casual clothes.

This doesn't belnd in with the whole interrogation scene. It would have been better if Tufael (guy in the grey) was wearing formal.

In our thriller movie Exhibit A the protagonist is wearing a suit. This made it look more realistic also made him look proffesional. This blended in with

the theme of crime investigation.

From this we have learnt that every little detail counts. All the props and the costumes that we have used, played a huge part in the scenes. It made the scenes look realistic also blended in really well. It says alot about a character and the scene just by simply looking at the props.

The lighting for our Prelim video wasn't natural.

As we wanted it dark and focused on the protagonist, we sued spotlights and placed them so its jus focuses ont the protagonist. With this we can also see who look vulnerable and who looked like they had power.

For our thriller most of the lights where natural. However when we first filmed it and saw it in the editing suite we saw that some of the scene such as the telephone scene was dark. We went back to film it and re done it with better lighting.

As you can see the light is facing towards the face, higlighting it and making it the main focus.

When it came down to editing the Prelim and the thriller we had to fix the match cutting shots. From our first experience with the Prelim, we did face some difficultiies getting it perfectly right.

Here are some screen grabs of our first match cutting scene when the protagonist oepns the door. When we watched this we realised that the timing wasn't right. However, we did think it was pretty good considering it was our first time

When we filmed the thriller, we got the hang of match cutting and there was one scene where we thought it worked really well. We learnt to cut quicker and fine cutting which made it easier for us.

This scene where the protagonist is about to enter the house climbing under the tape worked really well. We can say by far that that was one of the best match cutting scene so far. Also this created tense because it was from two differnet point of view.

THE 180 DEGREE RULE

When we learnt about his we applied this to our Prelim video because we had a scene where there was a conversation going on.

As we didnt have a conversation scene in our thriller we didn't apply this rule enourmously .

Here you can wee we applied this rule when filming the conversation scene.

SOUND

In our Prelim video we made the sound on Soundtrack. We had to get the hang of using Soundtrack because it was our first time. We thought that the sound in the Prelim was a success. It builded up tense and made it look realistic.

When it came to importing the sound on our thriller we decided to use Soundtrack as we felt comfortbale with it. There were also some houshold sounds such as the phone ringing which we used in the telephone scene. The sound in our thriller was also a success and we thought it went really well as it builded up tense. Also the sound of the type writer when the title came up blended in with the genre of crime.

ROOM 333

EXHIBIT [A]

Throughout the process I can say that

we have learnt alot. From planning to filming to editing. We learnt new skills each time which we applied to our final thriller. It did take some time to get used to some of the technologies we used, however we do think that we did a good job out of it.

PANNING:- The panning shot in our Prelim was a success after few takes. So we decided to have a panning shot in our thriller.
