Timeline of Roman Emperors

January 16 27 BC – August 19, 14 AD

The First Emperor

-joined forces with Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus in a military dictatorship known as the Second Triumvirate

-Lepidus was driven into exile, and Antony committed suicide following his defeat at the Battle of Actium

- adoptive son of Julius Caeser

September 18, 14 AD – March 16, 37 AD

The Second Emperor

-Adopted son of Augustus

-one of Rome's greatest generals

-came to be remembered as a dark, reclusive, and somber ruler who never really desired to be emperor

-exiled himself from Rome

March 18, 37 AD – January 24, 41 AD

The Third Emperor

- Expanded the Roman Empire into Mauretania and made a significant attempt at expanding into Britannia

- Assassinated on January 24, 41 AD from conspiracy involving senators and Praetorian Guards

January 25/26, 41 AD – October 13, 54 AD

The Fourth Emperor

- Constructed many new roads, aqueducts, and canals across the empire

-Nephew of Tiberius, brother of Germanicus and uncle of Caligula

-Proclaimed emperor by the Praetorian Guard

-Was probably poisoned by his wife in favor of Nero (her son from a previous marrage)

-Had a limp, had speech impediments and was the laughingstock of the empire until he was proclaimed emperor

October 13, 54 AD – June 11, 68 AD

The Fifth Emperor

-Grand-Nephew and adopted son of Claudius

-focused much of his attention on diplomacy, trade, and enhancing the cultural life of the Empire

- Ordered theaters built and promoted athletic games

- Many people believe that he was a paranoid schitzophrenic

- Nero's rule is often associated with tyranny and extravagance

- Is known for many executions, including those of his mother and the probable murder of his stepbrother

- known for having captured Christians burned in his garden at night for a source of light

June 8, 68 AD – January 15, 69 AD

The Sixth Emperor

-Seized power after Nero's suicide, with support of the Spanish legions

-Murdered by Praetorian Guard

-First Emperor in the 'Year of Four Emperors'

-Short and hunchbacked

-Was an industrious pleader

-Gained consulship through his father

January 15, 69 AD – April 16, 69 AD

The Seventh Emperor

-Roman Emperor for three months

-Second emperor in 'The Year of Four Emperors'

-Belonged to an ancient and noble Etruscan family

-Was removed from office due to affair and exiled to Lusitania

April 17, 69 AD – December 20, 69 AD

The Eigth Emperor

-The Third Emperor of the 'Year of Four Emperors'

-claim to the throne was soon challenged by the eastern provinces

-War ensued -> leading to a crushing defeat for Vitellius

-Was excecuted in Rome by Vespasian's soldiers on 22 December 69

July 1, 69 AD – June 24, 79 AD

The Ninth Emperor

- Founder of the Flavian dynasty, which ruled the empire for 25 years

-Held the consulship in 51 AD

Armies in Egypt and Judaea declared Vespasian emperor on July 1

-> Vespasian joined forces with others

-> Primus and Mucianus (appointed generals) led the Flavian forces against Vitellius, while Vespasian gained control of Egypt

-> On 20 December, Vitellius was defeated

-> the following day Vespasian was declared emperor by the Roman Senate.

June 24, 79 AD – September 13, 81 AD

The Tenth Emperor

-Was Vespasians' son

-Titus was left in charge of ending the Jewish rebellion.

- In 70-successfully laid siege to and destroyed the city and Temple of Jerusalem.

-Titus was awarded a triumph; the Arch of Titus commemorates his victory

-Completed the Colosseum

-Known by the people for helping heal what was caused by two disasters

-Eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 and the Fire of Rome in 80.
