Digital Citizenship

A Social Presence

Social media is everywhere. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pintrest, Instagram are all sites that are used daily. As of the beginning of 2014, 58% of people worldwide use at least one social media site daily. On average, an American will spend 7.6 hours per month on social media. And 25% of Facebook users are under the age of 10. This means that from a young age, a social presence is being formed online. Having that online presence makes it possible for people to find you, and get to know you, without ever actually meeting or talking to you.

Online Interaction

Email, chat (Facebook, GChat, AOL, etc), Skype, Hangouts, and commenting on articles/posts/videos are all ways that we interact online. With Digital Citizenship, it is important that we know what the proper etiquette is for each type of communication. Emails for business should be formal, Skype calls/Hangouts should not be done in overly crowded places where it is hard to hear, and text should be written out, not abbreviated. These may be simple rules, but they are often not followed. Online communication can cause laziness, however, one must know what is appropriate for the situation in which they are communicating and following the rules of online communication that go with it.

Why We Need It

What It Is

Being a Digital Citizen and abiding by citizenship rules protects Internet users. By following the rules of the web, one can maintain a positive identity online. Employers, teachers, law enforcement, colleagues, anyone can find anyone on the Internet if they want to. Therefor it is important that we know what is out there and have some control about what we ourselves put out there
