Home life

Family Relationship

The Youngers are constantly fighting and arguing over money issues, religion, education, and have no respect for one another. They live in such a tight knit space that tension is never resolved in any of the family.

Living in Chicago in the 1950's as an African American family, home life as you probably can see was not the best. They were living in a small, two bedroom "rat hole" of an apartment.

My Home Life

My Family Relationships

My family has respect for each other's feelings and privacy. There is never really a lot of fighting that takes place. Whenever there are occasional disagreements we have a much more spacious home and can spread out if we need time apart from one another.

Living in White Oak, Texas as a Caucasian family, my home life is somewhat privileged. Each person in my family has their own bed and their own room.

Money in My Life

My parents are educated and have jobs that support our family well. My siblings and my plans to go to college have never been an issue. There has never been a conflict with my family and money. We also receive monthly allowance for doing chores ad are responsible for learning to appropriate that money wisely.

Mama Younger was the Christian influence of the family and very frequently gave God all of the credit for what little the family had. Even though Mama always took the family to church when they were little, her daughter Beneatha, claims that she does not even believe in God and thinks of Him as just an "idea." Mama also has strong religious objections to alcohol , which cause tension between her and Walter.

The Youngers are receiving a $10,000 life insurance policy from the death of Mama's husband. Walter feels like he has a sense of entitlement to the money, and therefore Walter wanted to invest in a liquour store. On the other hand, Beneatha wants the money to fund her college.

Religion in My Life

My parents raised my siblings and I in church and have kept us activley involved in our youth group. Based on this, I have never questioned my belief in the reality of God.

Racism

Mama wanted to use the $10,000 to buy a new home that was better than what they had. She found a great deal on a house that was in a white neighborhood. Once the people that lived in that area found out, they were willing to pay them not to move.

Racism in 2015

In 2015, Racism is still going on in some aspects but is not as bad and as big of a deal as it once was. In my community everyone has equal rights and is treated fairly, regardless of race.
