The setting and location for music videos set a scene that immediately, and also offers the audience to make assumptions on the characters in the context of the setting, costume and props, even if they are inaccurate.

This is shown by in this video Calvin Harris are in an unknown location driving on windy roads because of the robbery just committed.

Costumes

Editing is used to keep the audience excited and enjoy the viewing more. Rapid editing is often used when there is a fight scene or a chase. in this video there is a chase scene in the cars between Calvin Harris and Example.

To the left is some screen grabs from the music video, it illustrates a story in under 4 seconds of cross cut rapid editing, it suggests a flashback of when they were robbing the item, or a flash forward of how the robbery will turn out. The editing fits with the music playing in terms of tempo. Also the lyrics 'we were riding that wave'.

Both characters are in it together, the symbolism of the word wave is they are naturally occurring, as beautiful as they are sometimes, they can cause massive damage and ruin everything, could symbolist a third party in the robbery that will ruin everything.

Music videos also incorporate a variety of camera shots.

Pan/Tilts- are to move to each performer and can also be used to show a location, this depends on how quick the pan is to it effectiveness,

Close Ups/Extreme Close Ups- Arguable the main shot used with music videos, they are usually focused on the artist as their mouth mimes the lyrics, which is them promoting there own song. Close Ups are can also focus on the emotions of the artist, and also of significant instruments and significant props, This is shown in the screen shot of The Script ft. William - Hall of fame.

Low/High Angle- This is a common convention in music videos, as in films it is used to represent importance and also insignificance.

Codes and Conventions of a typical music video.

A wide range of styles of film making techniques are used with in music videos, including animation, live action filming and documentaries and non narrative approaches. Some blend different styles like animation and live action filming. Some follow the narrative and some do not. There are also lyric videos for some songs whilst the music video is still under development but the track has already been released. As shown below with the new song She wolf- David Guetta

A music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, this is consistently used throughout music videos as a way to produce or market a track ,which in turn promotes the artist. Modern music videos are primarily used as marketing device used to promote the sale of music recording in form on CDs or on iTunes. The introduction of music video channels founded by ~MTV in the 80s gave artists the perfect opportunity for mass marketing of the song and the artist in the video.

Iconography

Every music video contains props, although it depends on the genre of the video to what props are being used, obviously the props have to symbolism or have direct relevance to the theme of the video or lyrics of the song. Props can be equipment or instruments stage of lighting. In this video Calvin Harris uses his glasses and gloves as props because they have committed a robbery.

Setting and Location

Also dependent on the lyrics as well as the genre of the video performers wear different outfits, representing their own views and the genre of the video. In this video Calvin Harris and Example are both in black clothes with a balaclava and gloves to tie in with the robbery.
