Sri Lanka is an island country in south Asia and near south-east India

The island was known in antiquity as Lanka, Simoundou, Taprobane, Serendib, and Selan. During its colonization, the island took the name, in English, of Ceylon, name that was continued using later. Its particular shape and its proximity to India made it known as the "Tear of India".
