So Far . . . (October 2011-Present)

So what is a Maker anyway?

And a MakerSpace?

"We are all Makers. We are born Makers (just watch a child's fascination with drawing, blocks, Lego, or crafts), and many of us retain that love in our hobbies and passions. It's not just about workshops, garages, and man caves. If you love to cook, you're a kitchen Maker and your stove is your workbench (homemade food is best, right?). If you love to plant, you're a garden Maker. Knitting and sewing, scrapbooking, beading, and cross-stitching -- all Making." (Anderson, 2012)

"A makerspace is a place where people come together to create and collaborate, to share resources, knowledge, and stuff." (Britton, 2012)

"A good Informations (sic) Commons brings together researchers, instructors, students, teachers, and users, equipping them with the technology (computers, projectors, Internet access) and furnishings (workstations, conference rooms and classrooms, print stations) to meet the goals they set for themselves." (Beagle, Bailey & Tierney, 2006. p xvii)

What does an Academic Library make?

"You guys are great about communicating and getting our objects to us in a timely fashion. It's been a great experience so far and I can't wait to continue and see what else I could print."

Student

"Thanks for acquiring new technology that we can try out! I imagine at some point I'll find something scholarly to do with it :)"

How?

We got a grant from Campus Technology Services.

Wait, my library already does all of those things . . .

Congratulations, you have yourself a MakerSpace!

"MakerSpaces are a real umbrella term for the kinds of places where creativity is really important and they embrace a wide variety of media." Kristin Fontichiaro

"The selection process can be thought of as a four-step process: (1) identification of the relevant, (2) evaluation (is the item worthy of selection?) and assessment (is the item appropriate of the collection?), (3) decision to purchase, and (4) order preparation and sometimes placement." (Johnson, 2009)

"Where's all the stuff? It's all over the place!"

Scholarship

"The Survey of Adult Skills defines problem solving in technology-rich environments as “using digital technology,

communication tools and networks to acquire and evaluate information, communicate with others and perform

practical tasks” (OECD, 2013)

Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development

We should build our MakerSpaces with these in mind.

And maybe our libraries already ARE MakerSpaces.
