What is a Literature Circle?
A literature circle is another
name for a book club.
People in a literature circle are
reading the same book and meet
on a regular basis to discuss it.
Each member of the literature circle
must come to the weekly meetings
with their reading complete.
Students also need to fulfill their
designated literature circle role and
bring that information to the weekly meeting.
There are five Literature Circle roles.
The first is Passage Master. What
Are the responsibilities of the
Passage Master?
The job of the Passage Master is to find interesting, important, and/or difficult parts of the story to discuss.
The Passage Master helps the group
discuss important parts of the story
so that everyone knows what is going on.
What is an Illustrator?
The job of the Illustrator is to summarize
the events of the story in pictures.
The Illustrator helps the group understand the story
by creating pictures, maps, graphs, etc. to explain the
events in the story.
What is the job of
the questioner?
The Questioner has a job similar to that of a teacher.
The Questioner creates questions that help guide the group’s discussion.
What is the Connector?
The Connector’s job is to find ways the story connects to things that members of the group know (personal experiences, other stories, ideas learned in other classes, etc.).
