Bone Fractures

Non-Displaced

Normal

Non-Displaced

The bone is broken but does not move from is normal position.

A normal bone

Comminuted -

Normal

Displaced

The bone is broken into several pieces.

Displaced -

The bone is broken and its ends are out of their normal position.

Spiral -

The bone is excessively twisted and forms a

ragged break. This is common injury in sports.

Incomplete

Incomplete -

The bone is not broken all the way through.

Greenstick -

An incomplete fracture, where one side is

is broken and the other is bent. This is common

in children.

Linear

Linear -

The fracture runs down the length of the bone.

Transverse

Depressed

Broken bone is pushed inwards.

It is a typical skull fracture.

Transverse -

The fracture runs horizontally through the bone (perpendicular to the length of the bone).

Compound

Compound (Open) -

The end of the fractured bone

breaks through the skin.

Compression

The bone is compressed.

Simple (Closed) -

Epiphyseal

The end of the fractured bone

does not break through the skin.

Epiphyseal -

The epiphysis is separated from the diaphysis

along the epiphyseal line. This occurs where

cartilage cells are dying
