"Maycomb had lost no time in getting Mr. Ewell's views on Tom's demise and passing...Mr. Ewell said it made one down and about two more to go," (pg. 241).

Bob Ewell is a drunk.

"Atticus said the Ewells had been the disgrace of Maycomb for three generations. None of them had done an honest day's work in his recollection," (pg. 30).

"Nobody was quite sure how many children were on the place. Some people said six, others said nine; there were always several dirty-faced ones at the windows when anyone passed by," (pg. 171).

"Maycomb's Ewells lived behind the town garbage dump in what was once a Negro cabin," (pg. 170).

"Every town the size of Maycomb had families like the Ewells. No economic fluctuations changed their status--people like the Ewells lived as guests of the county in prosperity as well as in the depths of a depression. No truant officers could keep their numerous offspring in school; no public health officer could free them from congenital defects, various worms, and the diseases indigenous to filthy surroundings," (pg. 170).

"...Atticus was trying to show, it seemed to me, that Mr. Ewell could have beaten up Mayella [his daughter]," (pg. 178).

Bob also relays some of his wrath on Tom's wife: "...Calpurnia said it was hard on Helen, because she had to walk nearly a mile out of her way to avoid the Ewells, who, according to Helen, 'chunked at her' the first time tried to use the public road," (pg. 249).

Bob was cruel in court.

"Judge Taylor went on in tones of good will: 'This is the first time you've ever been in court? I don't recall ever seeing you here...let's get something straight. There will be no ore audibly obscene speculation on any subject form anybody in this courtroom as long as I'm sitting here. Do you understand?'

Mr. Ewell nodded, but I don't think he did," (pg. 172).

Instead of being revered, Bob is still looked down upon in the community.

"'I destroyed his last shred of credibility at that trial, if he had any to begin with. The man had to have some kind of comeback, his kind always does. So if spiting in my face and threatening saved Mayella Ewell one extra beating, that's something I'll gladly take. He had to take it out on somebody and I'd rather it be me than that houseful full of children out there," (pg. 218).

Mr. Bob Ewell brought upon his own death. He attacked the Finch children with the intent of murder. He was killed by Arthur Radley before he could mortally wound the children. Mr. Ewell was so humiliated by the trial and was so angry, he had no other way to express his rage other than trying to get back at others.

Weapon that killed Bob.

Under humiliation, Mr. Ewell strikes out in an immature and savage way.

"It was Miss Stephanie's pleasure to tell us: This morning Mr. Bob Ewell stopped Atticus on the post office corner, spat in his face, and told him he'd get him if it took the rest of his life," (pg. 217).

Mr. Ewell was not well educated. His point of view was that of one in poverty. Some of his actions can have some slight justification. Without a good education, he was susceptible to making incorrect choices. He was from three generations of poverty and low living standard. He was most likely treating his children the way he was treated. Many people of that time frame were racist. His viewpoints on colored people were not uncommon. Mr. Ewell, as I have previously stated, was not greatly revered in the town either. He was always the victim of charity. He was always pitied and looked down upon. His alcohol problem did not help his problems either. He may have drank to escape the horrors of poverty as well. Mr. Ewell was a single parent with several children. This could not have been easy, and that may have also contributed to his alcohol problem.Bob Ewell is a cruel, mean person, but he did not get there all on his own.

Problems and Challenges of Mr. Bob Ewell

The Disgrace of Poverty

Mr. Bob Ewell is very poor. He and his family live in the dirt. They don't have very high standards for home life or living in general. They have not been allowed the opportunity to practice great kindnesses or help others because they don't have much. In Maycomb County, they are outcast among the white folks because they are poor, and they are outcast from the black folks because they are white. They must deal with all o fhte judgements of the townspeople.

The Death of Mr. Ewell

Bob Ewell accuses Tom Robinson of raping his oldest daughter, Mayella. Tom Robinson claims that Mayella tempted him to kiss her, but that he ran. This trial is one huge major event in the life of Bob Ewell before his demise.

Bob is quite foul during the trial. As well as being racist, he is cruel to Atticus and the judge when he does not get his way. Bob was looking to be a hero, but instead he was looked upon as trash as before.
