How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My product will be more beneficial to certain groups than others because the target market of my magazine will be set to a specific group of people so it will apply more to that group than others. My magazine is based on the house music genre, so this means that those who follow house music will feel more involved in this magazine than those who listen to rock/punk music. My product represents these social groups because it involves the reader – this is done by grabbing the attention of the reader with bold letters and titles so they pick up the magazine and use persuasive and catchy text on the cover to ensure viewers buy the product. Also, my product applies more to the house music genre because there is specific context in my magazine (such as CDJ’s) which only those who listen to listen and know about house music will understand. Another reason my product is appropriate to this genre is because I have previously studied various different front cover, contents and double page spread articles which other magazines of a similar genre have, and I have tried my best to keep to the general house style of house music magazines.
This magazine cover consists of a male artist who is stood up againts a window. This shows us a lot because it shows that he has an attitude like the general sterotype of a male. Also, he has a beard which is mainly common to see on males. Because this is a house music magazine, there are many different colours to associate with on the page; for example he is wearing an unusual t-shirt relating to a DJ mixing a set of turntables with 3 or 4 different colours. Another factor of this magazine cover is that the smaller headings are dotted around the page which makes the viewer read all of the headings as they look for the one they wish to see. Everything on this page is placed purposely and that is because the magazine company want you to keep reading the whole of it.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
An example of a media institution which would distribute my product would be music stores such as HMV and also other large supermarkets like Asda, Tesco and Morrisons. These are the main stores which would sell my product because they are where my target market would visit - for example, I would sell my product at HMV becuase customers enter that store to buy music products as most HMV stores have a whole floor dedicated to music related products. This would be useful for me when marketing my product because I know that my product will be noticed here by my target market.
Who would be the audience for your media product?
As I have explained in the previous two questions, the target market for my media product is mainly those who are interested in the house music genre aged between 14 and 40. I have chosen this age group beca$use I think that 14 is the youngest age for people to start taking on board a brief understanding of the genre, and 40 as the oldest age because that is when most people my change genre and grow out of that style of music after that age. I have thought out my target market thoroughly and have settled with this decision because i think that it is sensible and correct for the genre of my magazine.
Deadmau5 is one of the biggest names in the house music genre and is seen as an idol to all young DJ's who enspire to one day be a music producer. As you can see from both the image and the previous video, he plays at large venues and must love what he does for a living.
How did you attract/address your audience?
When i was creating my magazine, I realised that if i did not involve the audience, they would get bored and not bother with the magazine again. So I thought - why not make it slightly humorous and make the reader laugh very once in a while! I did this and I think that it has made a difference to the involvement of the reader. I attracted my audience by showing them what they want to see on a front cover - I used the semiotic theory which is the two specific colours which attract the human eye more than any other colours, red and yellow. The title of my magazine and most well-known magazines are red, and this is for a reason; it attracts the viewers attention. This is what I have done for my magazine to attract readers and I have also edited professional pictures so that it fits in with the style of the magazine.
What have you learnt about technologies from the proces of connstruting this product?
The main task i have had to overcome is getting my head around all of the tips and tricks of using Adobe Photoshop. This software must be one of the most complicated ones I have ever had to use; but once you learn the basics then you get used to doing the text effects and editing photos. I have also learnt that using harder software allows you to come out with greater products in the long run - I did not think that from using photoshop that I would have finished with a professional-looking magazine front cover, contents and double page spread. I have also learnt a few new tricks on Blogger, the website which you have to post your progress on as you are going along throughout the process of making your music magazine.
That video was here to take you through the day in the life of David Guetta. He turns up to a city, meets a lot of famous people he is already in touch with, makes some music has a few drinks, plays at a festival, goes to a few parties, then goes to a hotel and it starts all over again in the morning - surely life can't get better than that!
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the fill product?
From the beginning, I feel that I have learnt a lot of new skills on the basis of software - for example, I have learnt new skills on Photoshop for the future and I have also learnt how to use Blogger. Another thing that I have learnt is to keep on task at all times because if you don't then you will fall behind - this was a problem for me to begin with but I completed all of my work on time in the end.
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
My magazine challenges other media products by offereing competition to other magazines who are trying to sell their products to the same target market. Competition for my product would be magazines such as Mixmag and DJmag. I would use other magazines by saying that we would be better than their issue and ours is the one to buy by relating to the sales figures for the year.
