The Practical tips I have seen and which to put into my own music video.
- Lip-syncing is a vital ingredient for music videos, it comes in different forms in pop videos it is a person moving their lips, in rock videos it is a person moving their lips with a microphone near their mouth
- There is more than one location. The location is chosen to fit the lyrics and mood of the song. For example sunny outdoor location for a pop video and dark dull outdoor location for slow (sad) song.
- Costume can be used to either create a specific mood or to present the genre or to unite a group. For example heart glasses for a funk music video creates a happy funky mood. Luminous tights presents a pop music video. Four girls wearing black coats unite these girls as a group, often as dancers.Their uniform clothing (every dancer is wearing the same) can separate them from the artists. (singers)
- Videos include a narrative if it fits the aspects of the genre and the lyrics. For example funk would not include a narrative as the aspect of the genre is to present a calm dancing mood. Whereas pop songs may include a narrative to introduce people to aspect of the genre which is to have fun, by example showing how the singers find their way to a party.
- Shots of just the artists alone often lip-syncing show who the singer (narrator) is.
Slow Song (Lady Gaga- Speechless)
- Low key lighting is kept consistent, each shot is dark which fits the mood and lyrics of the song
- ballet dancing fits the slow tune music
-different locations and variety of shot types.
- The dance routine matches the beat of the song. The editing (cut) was used to move scenes to match the beat though it is montage it helps to narrate the lyrics through mise-en-scene.
-Mise-en-scene: the chosen location and body language helps to bring out the story behind the lyrics for example her under the water with ruined mascara shows she is suicidal and upset. The fast pace ballet dancing and her behind the light candles show shes she is angry which connects the video to the lyrics 'i'll never love again'
Pop song (Like a G6)
- Bright colours in the location (the graffiti wall)
-Costume (for the dancers)is bright during music
- Gendered dancers; shots of only girls dancing
-Dance routine, the dance is in time
with the music and looks fun which fits with the happy mood of the song
-Different scenes, variety of locations
-Poses in shots, which makes the shot look like a picture as opposed to a performance.
- The beginning is used to narrate the song even though the rest of the shots during the score are montage, this is done by having a lady smartly dressed who gives a lot of money to a poor guy on the street, this money makes him feel like a G6.This narrative introduces the song and emphasizes the lyrics.

The practical tips I have learnt from Low Budget Ideas
Funk song (Blame it on the boogie- Michael Jackson
- No narrative (montage editing)
- Costume to match the time of the song which is 80s.(heart glasses/red tie/purple top)
-Editing is interesting ranging from one shot to a shot divided into four. Colour changes to fit the happy mode of the song from normal to green even drawing placed on the screen. the change of the image to purple stick man makes it interesting and fits the happy mood of the song.
-There is a dance routine
-There is a life performance, the prop of microphone reveals this alongside prop of guitar and drums and the mise-en-scene of people playing these instruments
Rock Music Video (Stacy's Mom - Fountains of Wayne)
- It uses a variety of shots and locations
- The narrative fits the lyrics
-They use the green wall as a place where they play live instruments, which is one of the conventions of roc. (live performances)
- Facial expressions on the male singers show lust. this shows how mise-en-scene is useful in linking a video to the narrative
- Lip-sync in time with the music
- Fast cut to fit the clapping in the music at beginning.
-costume is kept consistent to show the boys are performing live.
-Everyday locations fit the casual clothes (costume) that the female is wearing
