Learning how to crop an image perfectly was one of the most difficult parts of the editing, I would sit there for hours cropping the same controller because I kept messing up. The magazine went through a lot of changes, most of our original ideas were scrapped, the only idea that remained was the layout for the table of contents. Also, as we kept discovering the many tools Photoshop had to offer, we were able to improve our layouts as we went on.
We used an array of colors to give the magazine a sort of "virtual world"
feeling. The cover was designed to catch the reader's eye with the Twitch logo with its "popping out" effect. Our table of contents was created to interest the reader, incorporating the controllers in the table of contents to appeal to everyone who uses those systems. The table of contents also displays cohesivness throughoput both issues, having a controller that matched the color of the page, signifying the relation. My double page spread was designed to give the viewer a behind the scenes look at a live stream to get them interested in all the aspects that go into it.
Creating this magazine was a brand new expirence for me. At first, I wanted to create a magazine dedicated to theatre, but then my passion for video games over came me, and thats when I created Gamer Connect. My partner Ivan and I were able to combine our shared passion to create a magazine gamers everywhere would enjoy. It represents the colorful virtual world that comes alive in print that the gaming community will appreciate.
Our goal for this magazine was to go beyond what normal gaming magazines focus on. I based my edition on a live streaming medium called Twitch, a program I frequent. What I wanted to portray was the experience of live streaming through words, which I did was posting interviews with a wide array of different streamers.
This project was especially challenging because I had to learn how to use Photoshop, a program I was completely unfamiliar with. I was hardly able to use simple programs like Paint, but after hours of research and tutorials, I was able to master the program and learn skills I will use for a long time after this project. We used an array of colors to give the magazine a sort of "virtual world" feeling, incorporating the controllers in the table of contents to appeal to everyone who uses those systems.
For distribution, I wanted this print to be available to as much as the gaming community as possible. We decided to create a physical print to be sold in video game stores, but also offer a online version. One of our themes was convergence, so it would be appropriate to offer our product to different mediums.
