Election 2014 and Beyond: An i3 Ideas, Innovation and Information

The Democracy Commitment is an initiative to engage Community College students in civic learning. The goal is that every graduate will leave with knowledge in how to be involved and have a voice (take ownership) in their community.

Asked a lot of reflective questions:

1) Who bears compliance responsibility for the mandate of Constitution Day?

2) How do we grow voter consciousness and formal structures to support these efforts at the college?

3) How do we grow voter education?

4) What support is needed or already provided by administration?

A way to engage young voters supported by AASCU (American Association of State Colleges and Universities) and NASPA.

61% of students in 2012 didn't know how to register.

TurboVote has gotten 200,000 more voters in the past two years.

Users sign up and get a pre-filled out registration/absentee ballot sent to them, and receive text alerts of where to vote, and what polling stations are open when. They also run a help desk for any voting questions. A $500 scholarship is available, and it will cost $500 for the year.

Service Learning

A Session from Mesa Community College went over their class on Civic Engagement. They went over their journey on how to add Civic Engagement to their Student Learning Outcomes and their curriculum. They even provided a Civic Engagement Rubric that could be easily applied in many class projects or Student Services Programs.
