About the Blobfish

How does the blobfish Defend itself?

The Blobfish does not and actually can not defend itself because they are very weak and inactive creatures. They have very little muscle and rarely move.

  • The Blobfish is basically a huge blob of jell.
  • Its density is a little less than that of water.
  • The Blobfish wieghs about 20lbs
  • About 2.3 feet in length.

How does the Blobfish move?

The Blobfish moves by using its tail fin

because due to high pressure it's impossible for

its gas bladder to function which is why

they evolved gelatinous flesh over the years.

What is a Gas Bladder?

The gas bladder (also called a swim bladder) is a flexible-walled, gas-filled sac located in the dorsal portion of body cavity. It controls the fish's buoyancy and in some species is important for hearing.

The blobfish voted as worlds ugliest animal.

The Blobfish

Genus: Psychrolutes

Species: P.marcidus

It's habitat.

  • The blobfish can live anywhere from 2000 to 3900 feet below sea level.
  • The Blobfish inhabits the deep waters off the coast of Austrailia and Tasmainia.

Extinction

  • Scientists do not know when exactly the Blobfish wil go extinct.
  • There are only about 420 Blobfish left in the world.
  • There are some deep-water protected areas around sea mounts in the Southern Ocean but that is only really to protect coral and not the blobfish.
