Galaxies

Q: I can analyze galaxies and the differences between galaxies. I will compare the Milky Way Galaxy to other types of galaxies.

Galaxies

There are billions of planets and stars and all of these stars and planets are in different galaxies.

There are different types of galaxies:

spiral(see Milky Way for more information)

elliptical

Elliptical galaxies have old stars and no gas. They are usually found in high density places. They are named this because of their cicular shape. They can also be "cigar" shaped. These galaxies come in a wide range of sizes, the largest elliptical galaxies can be up to over a million light-years in diameter! They can be as small as 1/10 of the Milky way!

irregular

Irregular galaxies are galaxies that can't be identified as spiral or elliptical or that have no definate shape. Over 3% of galaxies that we know of are in this catagory. Most irregular galaxies are hard to see because most of them are small and not very bright.

barred spiral

Some scientists classify a barred spiral as a different type of galaxy. They are called "barred" spiral because it looks like there is a bar across the galaxy.

Barred spiral galaxies are fairly new discovery. Scientists have found that "bars" form when the galaxy has reached it's full maturity level. The bars mostly form in smaller galaxies. The "bars" start to form when objects, like stars and planets, start becoming unstable or are dying. They mostly form in spiral galaxies, hence the name barred spiral. Galaxies do not start out like this but can end this way.

Milky Way Galaxy

The Milky Way galaxy is our galaxy. The eight planets of our solar system are a tiny speck in this galaxy.

The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy.

Spiral galaxies are shaped like a spiral. These types of galaxies are the most common type. About 77% of the galaxies scientists know of are spiral galaxies. This is a lot more than any of the other types of galaxies. Spiral galaxies are classified be how tightly their "arms" are unlike they others which are classified by size.

The Milky Way has over 400 billion stars in it. The Milky Way happens to be one of the bigger galaxies with a diameter of 100,000 lightyears! Scientists think that the Milky Way is forming a bar along the center. So in a few billion years the Milky Way will have a complete bar and will be in the catagory of barred spiral galaxies.
