74-ish actually...

Two productivity apps from Apple that are the cream of the crop for presentations and document editing. They are not cheap as far as iPad apps go - $10 a piece, but they are worth the cost and FREE with all new iPads!

DOWNLOADS! iCab Mobile has a built-in Download Manager so you can download almost all files from the Internet (except YouTube videos). The downloads can be easily transferred to a Mac/PC/Linux computer but also to other Apps on the device which can open these files. iCab Mobile has great support for sharing/posting to other Web 2.0 sites & services, and supports Dropbox to export/import bookmarks, transfer downloads, images, files, & web pages to your Dropbox account.

Google Drive lets you keep all your stuff in one place. Upload all your files from your computer - even the big ones - and you can access them anywhere, including your iPhone or iPad. It works with your school GMail-based account, which now allows for UNLIMITED storage (Well, 10 TB actually).

Drive is improving all the time. You can view & share your Docs with Drive. Editing has now been moved to new Docs, Sheets and now Slides apps. Download them all for free!

An intuitive and straightforward office document tool that makes it easy to open, view, create and edit Word (DOC & DOCX), Excel (XLS), and now PowerPoint (PPT) files right from your iPad.

QuickEdit can connect you to all of your stored documents! Access your Google Docs, DropBox and iCloud Drive. The app also stores ANY file and easily transfers it between any computer for convenient one-stop file storage, just like a USB stick!

This app was formerly Office2HD and was $8. Now it is free and is a great Office-like solution for the iPad.

Drafts is the quick, easy way to capture and share text. In Drafts, text comes first – open the app and get a new, blank draft – ready to type. Don't get bogged down in a timeline just to tweet or post to Facebook. Don't tap your way through multiple screens to get down an email or SMS. Don't navigate folders, create files and name them just to jot down a note or create a to-do.

In Drafts you can get that text down quickly and decide what to do with it later. Extensive output options let you send text to Twitter, Facebook, email, SMS, a Calendar event, quickly save it to Dropbox or Evernote – or forward it to a growing list of other Apps such as OmniFocus, Things, Tweetbot, Byword, Sparrow and more.

Evernote turns the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad into an extension of your brain, helping you remember anything and everything that happens in your life. From notes to ideas to snapshots to recordings, put it all into Evernote and watch as it instantly synchronizes from your iPhone to your Mac or Windows desktop.

Notes can be text, photo and audio and are auto-synced everywhere, and text in snapshots are scanned and made magically searchable!

Want your audio notes automatically transcribed? Voice2Note will do this for 5 audio notes per month for free.

Dropbox is a free service that lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos anywhere. After you install Dropbox on your computer, any file you save to your Dropbox will automatically save to all your computers, your iPhone and iPad and even the Dropbox website! With the Dropbox app, you can take everything that matters to you on the go. Not only do you have access to your stuff, it’s always backed up and safe on Dropbox.com.

Create, control, present and share. Combining screencasting, desktop control, and an interactive whiteboard in one app, you’ll never have to turn your back to the class or audience again. Doceri is THE 800 lb. gorilla of systems for interactive lectures and teaching - that’s why you pay $30 for the companion desktop software.

Control your presentations live with Airplay or through your Mac or PC. Create hand drawn images over your presentations with rewind and playback. Cut, copy, paste or insert images, then record a screencast video and upload it to YouTube or Facebook directly from the app.

This is one of a handful of apps that I’ll share with you that are in the “Magical” category. I used to recommend a few different apps that could turn your iPad or iPhone camera into a document scanner, but they were a little slow and clunky to use.

With Scannable, just open the app and point your camera at a document, whiteboard, business card, receipt, and it will quickly capture, straighten, and make them ready to save or share - works amazingly with Evernote’s text scanning features to search for words in your scans and photos!

No more conference handouts that you find 3 years from now and say, "Oh, yeah, that would have been a good thing to use..."

Scan the handout, save it to Evernote, and just search when you need it!

I would be remiss if I did not include these three apps that were released just in March 2014. Actual Word, PowerPoint and Excel from Microsoft - no 3rd party apps here.

In the past, these apps required an Office 365 account to get their full use, but as of early November '14 all functions are now free!

The best of Google in one app. Say “Ok Google” and find everything from nearby restaurants to the calories in cheesecake. Google also shows you the info you need before you ask.

Talk instead of type. Say “Ok Google” then ask a question - Google will speak the answer aloud.

Ask Google to help you do things:

• “What are good restaurants nearby?”

• “Where is my package?”

• “Remind me to call mom at 5 pm.”

CloudOn has been purchased by Dropbox and will discontinue service as of March 15, 2015. Use Google Drive or Microsoft Office Apps now that they are free to use without a Microsoft 365 account.

I never really liked this app anyway... :D

Dragon Dictation is an easy-to-use voice recognition application powered by Dragon® NaturallySpeaking® that allows you to easily speak and instantly see your text or email messages. In fact, it’s up to five (5) times faster than typing on the keyboard.

With Dragon Dictation you can also dictate status updates directly to your Social Networking applications (Facebook and Twitter) or send notes and reminders to yourself….all using your voice. So when you’re on-the-go, stop typing and start speaking – from short text messages to longer email messages, and anything in between.

And... if you need help with dictation 'speak':

These are not iPad apps, but they allow you to take advantage of a built in feature (iPad 2 and up) - wireless screen sharing. No need for a $99 Apple TV or a $29 adapter cord!

These desktop computer applications mimic an Apple TV when your iPad and computer are on the same wireless network and once in mirror-mode anything on your iPad screen will show on your desktop and in turn your classroom projector, wire free!

I’m not going to guarantee that either of these apps will work in your specific school wireless network environment - check with your District Technology Specialists to see if you can use either of these apps. Both offer a free trial, so give them a shot!

This is the ONLY remote desktop app that streams video AND audio from your PC or Mac, allowing you to interact with your PowerPoint, Keynote, Word, Excel, Outlook, Quicken, IE, Firefox, Safari, World of Warcraft, and other PC / MAC applications over a Wi-Fi network. Go everywhere with just your iPad without having to carry your computer!

Version 2 makes setup and use even easier, and with an in-app upgrade, you can connect to your computer over 3G/4G. Splashtop requires a free installation of Splashtop Streamer on your Mac or PC to operate.

Productivity Time

Boy, could I have used this app back in AP English!

It’s a simple, attractive app that lets you write and save poetry on the go. Use the built-in rhyming dictionary as you're writing to look up rhymes, near rhymes, synonyms, antonyms, related words, and similar-sounding words.

Spend less time testing and more time teaching! Now you can lose the paper, the pencil, the timer and calculator – plus a lot of the manual labor normally required for fluency assessments for 1st through 8th grade reading levels. Enter your student’s name, select a passage, start the timer. As your student reads, simply press a button to count mistakes. When they’re finished, end the timer.

Instantly, you have a words-per-minute fluency score – all stored right on your device to access anytime, anywhere! You don’t have to worry about watching the timer or marking mistakes and later calculating and recording them. Instead, you can focus on what counts – listening and assessing your student’s reading fluency, expression, and comprehension.

The world's best speed reading app. ReadQuick helps you read faster than ever before. Great for dyslexics as well. ReadQuick displays the articles of your choice one word at a time at a pace you set. It is the only app that teaches you how to speed read while getting through your daily reading.

You can access articles you want to read through our partners like Pocket or find them yourself through the built-in Web browser. ReadQuick will tell you how long each article will take you to complete based on your words per minute rate. The more you use this app, the faster your reading rate will become. With ReadQuick, you read - and comprehend - more faster.

These two apps are the gateway for you to browse, checkout and download eBooks and digital audio books - all you need is your local library card! Did I mention that this is FREE?!?!

Pioneer Online Library and other Utah Public Libraries are purchasing books for electronic checkout. To get started, you need to have a library card from your local Utah library, and then follow the steps outlined from the Pioneer Overdrive page, or you can take a look at the steps I've outlined which are focused on using Overdrive (eBooks) and OneClickdigital (Audiobooks) for Utah Library eBooks on the iPad.

This used to come as a part of the $99 MobileMe service, but has now become free - but you MUST SET IT UP in order for it to help you out. If your iPad goes for a walk before you do, you are out of luck.

Curiosity is rewarded, discovery is at your fingertips, and new content is added all the time.

Create your own personal comic strips on your iPad using just the photos from your photo album or iPad 2 camera. Select one of the many included page templates. Add photos to the cells. Add a couple of balloons with fun words. Add additional effect symbols (stickers) like "Boom", "Splash", or "Bang" for a bit of extra spice. When you are happy with your new graphic novel, share it with friends and family by saving it to your photo album, emailing it to your friends, uploading it to Facebook or Flickr, or creating a Tweet with Twitter and Twitpic.

Create your own unique shows with animation and audio in real time! Simply pick out your actors and backdrops, drag them on to the stage, and tap record. Your movements and audio will be recorded in real time for playback later. This app is as fun as your own creativity. Act out a story of Pirates on the high seas, fight as scary monsters, or play the part of a Wild West bandit on the loose. You can even combine any characters however you want! Your creations are only limited by your imagination (and voice acting skills in my case).

Information includes: 12- and 24-hour ordinary clock time, times of rise and set for the Sun, the Moon, and the 5 classical planets, times of the beginning and ending of twilight, display of the planets in orbit around the Sun, altitude and azimuth for the same bodies, current phase and apparent orientation and relative size of the moon, current regions of day and night on a world map, and on and on...
