Mekong River
Location
- 12th longest river in the world
- drains more than 313,000 square miles
- flows through Laos, Thailand, Vietam, Cambodia, and the Southeastern Qinghai providence
- stretches from the plateau of Tibet to the South China Sea
- sources are Za Qu River and the Lasagongma spring
Water Flow
& Temperature
- the northern monsoon winds dry out the river
- lower Mekong basin temperatures arrange from 74 to 89 degrees fahrenheit
- May and Junes' southernly monsoon winds cause the water flow to increase rapidly
- August and September the water flow is the highest
- April the water flow is at the lowest
People
- People use the river for irrigation, food, and recreational purposes
- upland people are mostly Lao-Tai
- Most of the population is located on the Khorat Plateau or the delta
- many languages spoken are Tai, Hmong-Mein, Austronesian, Mon-Khmer, and Tibeto-Burman
- The lowland people speak mostly Austronesian
Farming
- many times farmers can only grow 1 crop per year
- lowlands farmers grow rice
- fruits and fish are also harvested
- flood waters are stored to plant 1 or 2 more crops per year
- storing water has improved the cultivable land
- practice shifting cultivation
Houses are built on logs for when the river floods.
