On May 7, 1915, The Lusitania was bombed. 1,198 passengers died including 128 Americans

Hungary declares war on Serbia

The Great war broke out in Europe

On August 3, 1914 Germany invaded Belgium, this plan called for a holding action against Russia, combined with a quick drive through Belgium to France; after France had fallen, the two armies would defeat Russia

America Enters The War

April 6, 1917

On April 6, 1917 congress issued a declaration of war responding to Wilson's call "Make the world safe for democracy"

When war was declared, the us was totally unprepared- and it had become clear that the allies could win only with swift & massive American mobilization

Congress passed a sweeping selective service act of 1917 authorizing the draft of young men into the armed forces

The brought about new job opportunities for women such as welding, and operating heavy machinery.

The war also led to women succeeding in the political area. The 19th amendment that was passed in 1920 gave women the right to vote

All blacks were placed in segregated units and many fought and die for their country. About 400,000 African Americas served in the armed forces.
