Print Advert

Q1 - In what ways does your music video challenge, develop forms and conventions of a real media product?

Q2 - How effective is the combination of your music video, DVD digipak and Print Advert?

Q3 - What have you learnt from audience feedback?

My Audience feedback has given me a good gender statistic as male and female are both 50%.

It has also given a good audience as 17-20 year olds can empathise with the characters in the video.

In this question we can see that everyone agreed that the video would not look out of place on MTV/Q. This could show that the video appears to be "professional".

One person said; "clever use of colour for certain things like the ties in a prodominantly black and white video". This individual style could give the video a professional look, although I believe that the style would not appear on a conventional music video and would be better suited to indie.

Again, 100% of people said that the video matched both the lyrics and the music. Through planning, I believe we achieved the desired effect in our music video. The editing matches to the beat of the music and the lyrics often associate with what is on screen. This is enforced by this comment; "Edited to the music and to the beat. Sometimes the thing shown on screen match the lyrics being sung. For example when it says 'this good girls gone bad' shots of her holding the gun are used."

This time 5 out of 6 people thought that the music video had a similar appearance to the digipak and advert. This is good as the style was shown clearly through the use of colour leave and black and white.

This shows a lot about the representation of the band. Most people went with rockers, but there were some other interesting answers like "Alternative" and "Clean".

This quote also explains the professionalism of the video in good detail; "The video is very smooth and cool. They drop dead while playing and act in the video showing they are performers aswell as musicians, which is what is required of many musicians in modern times."

Again, this question helps to establish what "professional" is. In this case it is based on time.

0 people believe it took 1-3 days showing that it wasn't rushed. 2 people believed that it took 1-3 weeks, which is not far off from the mark. Again, 2 people believed that the video took 1-2 months to make and another 2 thought it took over 2 months. 1-2 months was the actual time it took to make the video as editing was a long process. As people generally thought it took a while to make, this could link to the term "professional" as the more time put into a video, (usually) the better the quality.

All 6 people believed that the project was well planned and thought through. The only problem was this; "However I did notice that some shots are badly edited, like at 0.48 and 0.53 which are following the men walking. These shots are just a bit too long, as it is clear that they start from a still and begin walking, this slightly damages continuity and realism of the piece." I totally agree with this statement and would amend it given a second chance. But due to time constraints during the editing, I was unable to fix all problems as this one seemed fairly minor.

2 People believed the video needed no improvements. 4 people believed the video needed some improvements. One was mentioned in the last survey question. One is about video quality, but internet uploads are rarely perfect quality. One person commented on a narrative flaw, but the girl only picking up one bag shows that she is only interested (in what we assume) the drugs as this ties in with the lyrics. And the last one mentioned about the singer not getting the lines exactly right. Overall, people believed that the video was strong.

Finally, the last question involves the digipak and advert. 5 out of the 6 people thought that they needed no improvement. The only comment was that the "Advert could look more like it is actually advertising the digipak, doesnt specify directly that the digipak is being advertised. But that could be the effect that u are looking for." He was right to assume that this was the effect I was looking for as it creates mystery yet it does link by using the star image. This mystery also links with the digipak as people will wonder why there are three of the same person on the cover, in the same photo.

Q4 - How did you use new media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?

YouTube provided a big part to my project. In planning and research, I used it to find other bands with similar music and compare them. I also used it to apply Andrew Goodwin's terminology to some research on three music videos. I also used it to upload various pieces like after effects practice and the final music video. This allowed them to become part of a participatory culture and to be commented upon. My music video recieved some good, and critical comments. Another thing I used it for was Photoshop and Premiere Pro tutorials to assist with my work.

Jamendo, Dafont and Ps Brushes were also used during my project. Jamendo was used to pick a non-copyrighted song for the music video. Dafont was used to pick fonts on photoshop, this allowed me to have a wide range of fonts and edit them at will. Ps brushes allowed me to pick different brush styles which I only used on the back cover.

Premiere Pro was also incredibly useful, linking with after effects thoroughly. It helped me to perfect the effects like leave colour by using a garbage matte to select areas that needed to be colour masked, and delete areas that didn't. Although, it was time consuming the result was very good, and provided a strong star image. It also allowed me to record my commentary over the music video for Q1, making the evaluation more visually pleasing.

Thankyou

Blogger has helped me throughout the project. In planning, I was able to look at the media studies blog and research principles like goodwin's terminology and apply it to my own research. It also allowed me to upload my work onto the blog.

My AS work also helped me during my project. My magazine was heavily reliant on the use of photography and photoshop. My Digipak is very similar in that respect. It also helped me to develop the skills needed to use photoshop at an A2 level.

Animation

Transition Video

ABC Music Video

These three videos helped me to establish my skills. The transition video taught me to edit using Premiere Pro (Although, I had a good knowledge from the first year of A-Level Film Studies), lip-syncing to the music, and using a video camera.

The ABC music video taught me the basic skills in adobe premiere pro, like black & white and reverse. It also helped to establish a link between the visuals and the lyrics.

The animation taught me about key framing in adobe premiere pro, basically to move a stil image to a desired place. Aswell as the ABC music video, it helped to establish a link between the lyrics and visuals.

Powerpoint and slideshare also helped during my project. Powerpoint allowed me to input my research into interesting slides, to make the experience more visually interesting. Slideshare allowed me to upload my slides onto my blog.

Facebook and survey monkey really helped with the evaluation. Facebook (being a participatory culture along with YouTube) allowed me to post the survey I made using Survey Monkey. Survey Monkey then allowed me to analyse the results.

After Effects and Video Copilot were probably the most helpful. Video Copilot tutorials taught me the basics of after effects and some of the more advanced things. The CCTV effect and Leave Colour effect were not originally Video Copilot tutorials but this site allowed me to develop the skills to attempt it, in the end the effects turned out to be the strongest part of the video. After effects easy design and layout allowed me to utilise these skills and create a video by exporting after effects files to adobe premiere pro.

Photoshop was also a key program in the project. This allowed to adjust the digipak and advert to match the video by adding a similar effect. It also allowed me to produce flat plan sketches for the digipak/advert.

Finally, we have the video camera and Prezi. The Sony A1 (Video Camera) was incredibly helpful in achieving a high contrast effect and provided some nice shots. Prezi was very helpful in that it provided a bright and colourful evaluation to give the viewer a more interesting experience.
