Analysis of the music video Gives You Hell

Thought beats-

The song tells the story of two warring neighbours and how they try to disrupt each other lives in different ways. One such example is the band performing their actual song in their home and waking their neighbours up and this begins the battle between neighbours trying to get one over on each other. When the two neighbours are confronting each other the songs gets heavier as the drums and lead guitar get stronger and louder and then reverts back to a quieter beat when they are trying to annoy one another and then going back to the heavier beat after they have got their own back and when the confront one another again.

Narrative performance-

Like in most music videos of today Gives You Hell switches from a narrative (story) to clips of the band performing the song throughout the video. The video shows equal amounts of the narrative and the performance of the song by the band switching between the two, I think he showing of both the performance and narrative story of the song demonstrate the two meanings of the song as watching the performance gives the idea of someone singing about a break up and the narrative put the warring neighbour point of view across. When showing the performance of the song a lot of close ups of the band members are included. Lip-syncing is also seen during the narrative as well as in the performance.

The Star Image-

This music video was unusual for The All American Rejects as it was thier first video in which the band members portrayed characters other than themselves, i.e. lead singer Tyson Ritter plays the part of the rowdy garage band singer and also the part of the family man next door and the reest of the All American Rejects band playing the other garage band members. The song Gives You Hell was also the bands first song to break into the Worldwide charts rather than just the American charts.

Three ways to which videos relate visuals to the song-

The three ways videos do this are, Illustration, Amplification and Disjuncture.

I think this song uses amplification to relate to the song. I think the video uses amplification as the videos uses humour in it but also still has a link with the song. The song is all about a break up, the song tells the story of how a girls left a guy for another person and the song points out that the guy hopes that her life with the new guy will be terrible and that every time she sees the first boyfriend that she regrets leaving him. The way that the song links in with the video is due to the lyrics Gives you hell as it points out that the guy hope that every time the girls sees him his face gives her hell as it would remind of all the good times they had, the way it ties in with the video is that the video is about warring neighbours and they give each other hell by making each other lives a misery.

We see at the end of the video that the two neighbours switch girlfriends and lives and this can be a tie in with the priginal meaning of the song about a break up.

Technical aspects of the music video-

Plenty of MEAT is used in this music, MEAT being close ups of the lead singers face. The lead singers face is used so much as it is regarded ad the most important part to a music video.

The lighting and colour in this music video is used to show the different times of day that the neighbours get up and hor their lives differ from one another as the group go to bed during the day and are up at night were as their neighbours are the exact opposite as they are awake during the day and asleep at night. This difference of times is the main annoyance through the video as both sets of neighbours wake each other up throughout the song due to ther different sleep patterns.

Mise-en-Scene is mainly used in this video to show the difference betwwen the two male neighbours. The reason for this is that the lead singer of the band plays both the main lead characters so costume is used to demonstrate their differnecs, the singer characters is dressed in stylish clothes that show off that he is part of the band, on the other hand when playing the annoyed neighbour he is dressed more smartly.

Now here is the video for you to watch and make up your own mind about it.
