Alternatively , the victim is a teenage female character who comes from a middle class family and belongs to white british background. This is shown by her costume in the ending ( a long coat, jeans and trainers) and the pictures (blond hair, dresses, etc). The main victim character is seen more later on in the movie together with other victims who have similar characteristics and have been staked by the same guy. In the ending of the movie we are also introduced with police and many more characters who serve society such as; doctors, psychiatrists and teachers. All of these characters come from England as the film is being produced in England, however, overall the characters in the movie are diverse, there are ethnicities such as black, and asian used within the film.
In 'SE7EN' the main antagonist character is called John Doe. He is a middle age psychopathic serial killer obsessed with the Seven Deadly Sins of Christianity.
He gathers his information about victims and keeps a journal with all the details in it.
The victims character was portrayed positively as we only showed pictures of her having fun with her friends. We also chose a blond white female character as they are often portrayed as innocent and fragile within the real media texts.
Understanding representation is all about understanding the choices that are made when it comes to portraying something or someone in a mass media text. It's impossible to portray every aspect of an individual in a photograph, or even in a feature film, so certain features of their personality and appearance get highlighted, and are often enhanced, when it comes to constructing the representation that the audience will see.
In our title sequence we only showed two characters. The main (antagonist) and the victim. The antagonist character is a working class male who just became a young adult - 21 year old. His ethnicity is white gipsy who is also a christian and has a mental disorder. He is known to be straight as he has an obsession with teenage girls. All of this is being represented in our title sequence through the use of locations and his own environment where we filmed him, e.g. in the back garden he has a basketball hoop. this shows that he still lives with his parents due to his illness, also, his ethnicity can be guessed by his accent where he speaks on the phone about his feeling towards the victim.. Moreover, his costumes show that he doesn't have much money and likes to spend his time on the streets. This film is male dominant and we can it at the opening sequence as all the action and setting is being created around 'stalkers' character.
The main idea was to represent the stalker as a negative character who will play the antagonist part in our film. We done that by using the thriller genre conventions when creating settings and looking for locations while filming the stalker. Also the props we used had an impact on the person's character. The knives and other sharp tools in the shed showed that he is up to something bad, also, the graveyard scene creating a suspense feeling as if something was about to happen. Additionally, the way he was dressed up said a lot about him; most of the people who dress up in tracksuits and cover their face are portrayed bad in the media world, this way we show support towards the common stereotypes seen in the media.
In most thriller genre films the main character that is represented is usually a working class, middle age man. However, sometimes it could also be a teenager when it comes to the social media related thriller movies. Very often most of stalkers in these type of films tend to be either christians or atheist with a straight sexuality and sometimes a mental illness problems.
