INATTENTION TO RESULTS

by: Gabby Portela

Dysfunctional teams:

Become stagnate and fail to grow

Rarely accomplish their goals

Lose good staff members

Encourages team members to spotlight on individual goals

Is easily sidetracked

Often a lack of perceived clarity over what the big goal is

  • Team status – for some it is enough to be part of the team. Plenty of teams fall prey to the lure of status

  • Individual status – tendency of people to focus on enhancing their own positions or career prospects

Team members have to be focused on the combined good of the team

Many times, the team members focus their attention on their department, their budget, their career aspirations, their egos (ego syndrome)

A good team:

Trusts one another

Engage in conflict

Commit to decisions

Hold one another accountable

are very likely to set aside their individual needs and agendas and focus almost exclusively on what is best for the team

WHAT IS THE FIFTH DYSFUNCTION?

Inattention to results occurs when team members put their individual needs (such as ego, career development, or recognition) or even the needs of their divisions above the collective goals of the team
