The most significant outbreak

The Pandemic of 1918

Killed 50-100 Million

Killed more people than WW1

What is the disease and what type of pathogen is it? How dose it effect the human body?

On of the most mysteroius pathogen!

Theory: Spread in USA in an army camp

Due to WW1, movemnt of troops to Europe.

Spreads in Europe.

Media censorship due to WW1, but Spain was neutral

Comparison to Outbreak in 2009

Spain first country to tell media of this disease, thus named Spanish Flu

100-200 million infected

approx 12,407 deaths

Continue

People with pneumonia were given antibiotics and antivirals

Drugs such as Oseltamivir, Zanamivir and Peramivir were given to patients

Due to large military movement, overcrowded army barracks, unhygienic life with animals, such as pigs, and increased transportation between countries caused this flu to spread all over Europe, and then all over the World.

Better Medicine, and less movement around the world caused way fewer deaths if compared to 1918 pandemic

It ended in very mysteroius way. No one knows how it surporsingly ended, with fewer mortality rates all of a sudden.

- The disease is a influenza virus that is airborne caused from a mutation of a pig virus that now has become contagious to humans (H1N1)

- The pathogen is a virus

- It gave you headaches, fever(usually high), runny nose, sore throat, aches, Coughing, vomiting and extreme tiredness adn pneumonia.

what tissues it effects?

What portals of entry dose it use?

It uses your upper respiratory track.

It affects the respiritory system, mainly lungs and sepcifically alveoli. It also affected bronchus and branchioles which allowed more bacteria to enter their lungs, causing severe pneumonia

Factors that effected the outbreak

- population:

Lage migration of soldiers due to WW1 caused this flu to spread at a faster rate

- Geography:

Geography doesnt afeected this flu. It was able to spread in any enviornment. It casued more deahtes in Europe due to WW1

- Hygiene:

Soldiers used to live in overcowded barracks, with not enough nutrients and health food, they also lived with pigs and birds.

- Cultural beliefs and practices:

The most common belief was that Spanish

Flu started in Spain, but it is false. Because

Spain was the first country to tell about it,

thats why it was name after Spain

Factors that effected the outbreak Pt.2

How dose it spread and is it deadly?

- Globalization and the ability to travel:

Movement of soldiers all over the world.

Also movement of common people.

- Medical advances:

Better and efficient medical services. Such as medicne to fight agains pneumonia and vaccicines such as flu shots.

government support:

Governments sending doctors with troops all over the world due to WW1 for medication against Spanish Flu.

- Global/local response levels:

News spreading everywhere

Tension and deaths.

Newspapers repoting deaths in 100's every day

People scared to go out of their houses

Spanish Flu

It is an airborne disease, so it is highly contagious.

It is extremely deadly, not the virus itself, but the way the immune system resopnds to this virus. It spreads through careless spiting, sneenzing, and choughing.

The Mother of All Pandemics

Event progress through being an endemic, epidemic, and pandemic disease?

Body sends mucus in alveoli to fight virus. High amount of mucus causes the diffusion of oxygen between lungs and capillaries inefficient. Due to large build up of mucus, and swelling, the cappilaries burst, and the blood flows in the lungs. Internal bleeding causes the same effect as drowining , and eventually death.

Stated in USA in Army camp: Endemic.

Spreads in Europe due to army movement: Epidemic

Spreads all oround the world: Pandemic
