NATIONALISM

The nationalism that spread throughout the land called for reforms, both social and economic, to put the nation back on it’s feet and lead it to become a major competitor in the world market. There was an abundant amount of foreign capital invested in Latin America and that triggered most of the uprising and calls for change

I like to think of nationalism in terms of national sovereignty, the desire of nations to govern themselves and determine their own future. For Latin American nations, self determination, or national sovereignty, has been hard fought.

A great amount of things were happening in the world that made major changes in Latin America necessary and of course needed by the governments there. Mexico was one country within the region that changes were being made left and right, and one of the countries that needed major help in order to survive. Early in the century a revolution occurred in Mexico and brought a new nationalistic feeling to the populations intellectuals and a majority of the people of the region.

There were many other things that contributed to the sudden nationalistic outburst, but the Mexican Revolution that began in 1910 led to many interventions by the United States and the outcry of the Mexican population to be it’s own country and dismiss the foreign invaders from their nations lands. With World War I on it’s way the United States was trying to keep the western hemisphere intact, but failed in a way that the many different leaders during the time of the Mexican Revolution came and went over the next couple decades. During this time of chaos the emergence of the nationalistic feelings of the people in Mexico came to the forefront and demanded freedom from those oppressing them

A strong feeling of pride in and devotion to one's country.

How and why did nationalism evolve in Latin America in the first half of the twentieth century
