Our task:

Self-sufficient water management system for the Rock Village Project.

Efficient agricultural techniques.

Next Steps...

Done:

Beaufort Castle

-Clear vision

-Functioning partnership between SGT and Al-Amal Institute

-Rock Village 2012 Group: Sustainable Energy System

-Rock Village 2013 Group: Sustainable Water Management System and agricultural techniques

In Progress/To do:

Currently...

-no plans for ANY sanitation systems in Arnoun

-Open pit latrine predominant system

-Potential for contamination

Next Year's SGT:

- move towards implementation phase

- access scientific and student research

- work closely with stakeholders before choosing technical focus

- establish sustainability plan for farmers' network

- create realistic timeline and preparations for residencies (building structure, access to resources, available work tasks, community involvement)

Why Waterless?

-Eliminates sewage production

-Closed System

-Proper treatment allows on-site conversion of waste to fertilizer

-water supply unreliable

Waterless Sanitation

Agriculture

The Rock Village, Lebanon

Variable Climate - dry and wet season

Could serve as model for surrounding communities

Another area of research for AUB

No immediate impact for RV - 2-3 years

ICARDA = International Center for Research in the Dry Areas

SWOT

-AGRICULTURAL KNOWLEDGE!!

-initial seed supply

-yield optimization

-available resource

- ultimately --> hands off assistance

Best for dry climates

<25% moisture --> optimal

Less sensitive to temp

Slower pathogen destruction

~30 C --> 1 year treatment

Current State

Best in moist climates

40-70% moisture

Addition of absorbents and active mixing

Optimal - separation of liquid waste

55-60 C - Temp to Kill Pathogens

Dehydrating

Waterless Technology

Composting

-Wheat farming for 3 years

-No Irrigation

-No maintenance

-Decreasing Yields

-Organic Methods not economically viable

Potential........

Sustainable Farming

However........

-excited about RV potential as long term research area

-Supply Rock Village with agricultural engineer

-determine soil properties, soil history

-Necessary to implement seed multiplication system

-

-Research Station

-Seed Multiplictation

-Organic Methods if coupled with Waterless system

-Improvement for network of farmers

-Long time to implement

-Economic viability for farmers

-resistance to new methods

AUB - American University of Beirut

Seed Multiplication

contaminates system

-exchange of seeds

-education of farmers

-storage, selection, treatment

-more maintenance in early years

-Architectural plans (incorporate research results into architectural plans)

-Partnership with AUB

***AUB's Center for Civic Engagement and Community Service (CCECS) demands:

-More scientific data to justify the project

-Clearer structure of partnerships

-Continuity(How far is Aalto ready to go?)

-A plan and working mechanism for funding to reach stable support or self-sustainability

Broumanna Residents

Current State

Lebanon in general:

  • Water currently supplied by wells accessing underground aquifers
  • Relies on electric pumps - but power outages occur daily

Rock Village:

  • Mayor of Arnoun has confirmed new wells for Arnoun region have been constructed
  • There will be sufficient supply to Rock Village and can provide infrastructure.

Pumps!

Major risk to run off water harvesting is due to animal excrement and agricultural pesticides

Even though water supply is guaranteed, we recommend establishing internal system for water independence

Rainwater Harvesting

Will require filtration and/or disinfection system if used for potable use.

Mayor of Arnoun, Fawaz Katbay

Some landscaping work may be needed

underground

Surface catchment water... not so great in Beirut

In preliminary stages of the project a run-off system is proposed

agriculture

A roof catchment system can be implemented when construction begins for the residents

Water Sources

Strengths

  • Guarantees sustainability of Rock Village project.

  • Positive precedent for neighboring villages and similar projects

Weaknesses

  • Inconsistent pipe water supply

  • Poor quality of piped water

  • Bureaucracy within and between water institutions

  • Poor information about alternative water sources

  • Lack of accurate rainfall data

  • Definite architectural plans needed to plan system for rooftop catchment systems

SWOT

Threats

  • Insufficient funding for harvesting system (lower priority at the moment)

  • Global warming altering storage needs

Opportunities

  • Education in the concept of water conservation

  • Implementing new water conservation techniques

  • Research partners such as AUB
