In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In our media product we wanted our titles to fit with the quirky feel we hoped our romcom would portray.

To do this we hand made all our titles and produced them within the scene instead of later adding them over the top of the footage in the editing process...

Much like the real media product Napoleon Dynamite where the titles are presented on plates of food, cards, books and so on

Here are some examples of the titles we used in our own media product...

We thought our female protagonist should wear...

because all of these give her the characteristics of someone who is quite quirky and doesn't care what people think of her whilst still being pretty and appealing to a male and female audience...

a convention that is used in similar media products that we've looked at such as Juno and Garden State

To contrast, we thought our male character should look smart and clearly take pride in his appearance, therefore reflecting his arrogance

Much like in the The Holiday where Jack (Ashton Kutcher) lets his true colours shine as he stops trying to impress the girl

(This clip influenced one of 'the habits' in our film opening where Sam is 'fondling downstairs')

We chose to contrast his appearence with his characterisation in order to make the audience favour Becca as a character but still find the comedy created from Sam's character appealing

Narration

The use of non diagetic narration was an idea that we developed from watching films like The Holiday and Bridget Jones

We chose to use this convention as it means audience can immediately gain an insight to the thoughts and opinions of the protagonist which sets up how we sympathise with them for the rest of the film

For example, in The Holiday, Iris (Kate Winslet) is portrayed as an emotional, unlucky in love woman who wants nothing more than to be with the man of her dreams.

However for our media product we completely contrasted with this to avoid our opening from giving a 'lovey dovey' feel and to instead fit the quirky theme we're going for.

We did this through Becca's non diagetic speech where she described all the things she hates about men and relationships as clips of these examples appeared on screen.

How we scripted the narration is similar to the TV programme Sex and the City where Carrie Bradshaw introduces every episode with narration, as a lot of humour comes from the sarcastic tone and vocal techniques that are used by the actor. In contrast with Sex and the City, our media product also relies on the non verbal communication that we see from the characters on the screen as well as the specific vocal intonations that contribute to the humour.

Titles

Mise-en-scene

Doc Martens

Skinny Jeans

In terms of mise-en-scene we wanted a warm, wintery, cosy feel to be portrayed

A loose shirt

A fluffy hat

And minimal make-up

We also used a POV shot within two of our titles where the audience can see the hands of our actor as they produce the title

His attractive, smart-casual style would completely juxtapose with his ignorant, piggy character that we see from the offset
