Original ideas are crucial in terms of
creating something different and keeping
the audience entertained. The idea doesn't
have to be completely original, it can often
just be a different interpretation.
We have made use of this knowledge, whilst discussing possible film ideas. We wanted to keep
our idea simple, original and entertaining. Although our idea isn't completely original - as many films have been produced focusing on luck/magic - our film has a different twist than those already released. Instead we keep our film original by having a lucky penny, so her luck isn't genetic it is in fact by an object. When she loses the penny and becomes unlucky, instead of her generically just gaining her luck back upon finding it, she realises that the bad luck of losing the penny wasn't at all bad, it was in fact good as it helped her realise that her boyfriend, isn't who she thought. The realisation shows that the penny was lucky after all. This is completely unique, as from other films we've researched, the character tends to either realise they don't need luck, give it to someone else, or just regain the original luck. We wanted to achieve something else from our film.
Having a detailed narrative is crucial due to the short length of time you have to shoot a short film. It needs to be constructed in an effective and correct way, clearing showing a distinct, beginning, middle and an end.
Whilst deciding upon an idea for our short film, we made sure we had a simple, straight forward narrative.
Beginning:
Our idea focuses on a girl who is given luck by a penny that she receives from her Grandma. Although she is skeptical, she keeps the penny and has continuous good luck in matters important to her.
Middle:
The girl loses the penny and her luck begins to change. Everything goes wrong for her, so she turns to her boyfriend in her hour of need.
End:
The girl realises that her boyfriend stole the penny, and that the bad luck isn't in fact from the penny, it's from him. It is clear that the although the penny brought her bad luck once missing, it in fact brought her good luck from the realisation of her boyfriend's true colours.
I feel the narrative is simple and will be easy to shoot in the short amount of time we have. We've had good reviews so far on our film idea, and believe that is should be a success to shoot.
Having a good beginning will entice the audience
into watching a film. Without a good beginning, the viewer may get bored or distracted and end up turning the film off. In order to prevent this, short film's must contain elements of interest or relevance that the audience can get involved in, get intrigued or relate to.
During our planning, we decided that the best option would be to have a short title sequence/opening credits. This is because if we had long titles the audience may begin to wonder when the film will actually start and get distracted. We realised that adding a section of excitement would keep them intrigued. In order to obtain this, we decided to have a flashback whilst showing the title sequence/credits. This will be extremely crucial and effective, as it provides more time to shoot a detailed movie and gets the viewer engaged in what's happening and what's going to happen, enticing them into watching the rest of the movie. We believe that providing the audience with background knowledge will make them want to continue watching and use this information to follow the story.
A short film can be improved dramatically
by advanced techniques and styles. Different skills
really entice an audiences attention and keep them
intrigued throughout.
Despite having limited software, we still plan to make use of what we have available. We will be using Final Cut to edit our film which will allow us to add creative credits and an exciting title sequence that fits with our film. We have also planned to create our own title/credits effect of falling pennies which will be shot in slow motion, by us. In addition, we plan to shoot our film in HD in order to give it a professional and sophisticated look. Moreover, we have plans to use creative camera angles and movement to provide different insights to the plot. Such as over the shoulder shots, low angled shots, to name a few. We also want to film a phone conversation, in which we can hear both people but only see the main character. All this we have decided is to keep the audience intrigued throughout, and not keep tedious, repetitive shots, angles, movement and editing.
