NEW ZEALAND

Our project

We enjoyed learning about New Zealand a lot!!!!

We tried to learn some Maori songs, made beautiful masks and found out a lot about the animals and beautiful scenery. We got incredibly inspired to travel there one day :)

Aotearoa – the land of the long white cloud (in Maori).

This name was given to the country by the Maori who sailed in their canoe and saw this place from a distance.

KIWIS

New Zealanders are also known as "Kiwis". The name comes from the kiwi, a flightless bird native to New Zealand. It is also the national symbol.

A BIT OF HISTORY

Thank you!

The first European who landed on New Zealand shores was a Dutch explorer called Abel Tasman in 1642. The Maori People made them escape. The Europeans didn't come back until 1769 when British explorer James Cook mapped the entire New Zealand coastline. Actually, the Maori did not like the British and used to fight with them a lot.

GOVERNMENT

New Zealand is another country, which was once a part of the British Empire. The official head of state is the British Queen Elizabeth the 2nd. However, the real power is in the Prime Minister's hands. (Did you know that New Zealand was the first country in the world to give women the vote in 1893?)

LOCATION

FLAG(S)

A small island nation of just over 4.5 million people, New Zealand is made up of two major islands (North Island and South Island) and a number of smaller islands including Stewart Island located in the Pacific Ocean.

The flag of New Zealand has been in its current form since 1902 and because of New Zealand's British ties, it is the British Union Jack with four stars representing the Southern Cross. The Southern Cross are the four brightest stars in the sky over New Zealand. The New Zealanders would like to have a different flag. The black one with a silver fern which is now the unofficial New Zealand flag.

LANDSCAPE

The country is made up of some of the worlds most spectacular landscapes, from vast mountain ranges, steaming volcanoes to sweeping coastlines deeply indented fiords and lush rainforests. (Did you know that there are more sheep than people in New Zealand? )
