First we will cover a simple step-by-step process to write a thesis statement. Then we will go over poor and best examples!

1. Topic

Choose a topic.

2. Issue

Take a stand,

make a claim,

argue something!

Comparisons, Cause/Effect, Definition, Evaluation.

3. Rationale

A "because" clause:

What is/are your reason(s)?

4. Qualification

An "although" clause:

Introduce your topic,

provide context,

acknowledge the opposition.

5. Reorder and Revise

Recombine all of the previous parts into a single fluid statement.

Examples

Poor

  • Since 1980 the percentage of married students at BYU has never exceeded 29%. (Fact)
  • BYU is good at encouraging marriage at campus devotionals, social activities, and even in the classroom. (Opinion)

Better

Despite worries concerning declining marriage rates at BYU, recent statistics actually convey relatively consistent rates over the last three decades; this can be attributed to the University's extensive efforts to encourage marriage at campus devotionals, social activities, and even in the classroom.

That's it!

Or decipher to topic given by the authority in your life.
